Suffocating Coral Reefs with Plastics

Coral reefs are valuable to our oceans for many reasons. They provide valuable oxygen supply to the water which maintains liveable conditions for fish underwater. In addition, they also play a crucial role in stabilizing PH levels of the sea. However, more and more coral reefs are reported to be dying each year. Causes are often attributed to water pollution and dynamite fishing among others. This Thursday, a report from the Atlantic states that plastics are also among the top causes of the destruction of coral reefs. According to their report, plastic wastes in the ocean contribute strongly towards coral diseases such as the "white sydrome" which gradually leads to a coral reef's death. It is indisputable that coral reefs play a vital role in our environment, however, with threats such as these, it won't be a surprise if they're numbers quickly shrink to zero. I believe that as climate activists, we are capable of making an impact even in small wastes. Think before you drink that soda in a plastic bottle. Think before you use that non-biodegradable shopping bag. Think before you use your next plastic. Think about the detrimental damage that you would contributing. I ask you to think big!
