Hello From South Korea

Hello from Korea! My name is Joon ho Yoo, and I was a 4th E-gen ambassador in charge of Gyeongi Province, South Korea. Thanks to various programs provided by Samsung Engineering, since I could contact and get a reply from Erika, who was also taking care of E-gen family when I was a high school student.

I am not a great person nor smart guy (and was not), but I just want to share my old past, hoping to give a little inspiration to anyone who thrives to save the world from global warming and climate change.

What I did during my term as an E-gen ambassador was to write some articles (kinda essays) on topics given every month. (maybe it was a weekly post or so, I cannot remember every specific curriculum of my task as it has been 8 years) I was not that good at English, so I felt time writing the essays like drinking sour, mixed berry juice. I felt like that, though it helped me develop my English proficiency but somehow I didn't like my writing skills and essays. But I did not recognize that this activity itself made my inner willingness to proceed on my dream to get involved in anti-climate change movements.

I kept on doing various club activities (extracurricular ones) concerned with sharing ideas about climate change, and explaining the vicious cycle of relationship between climate change and 'famine'. Very few people did know that these 2 evils were related with each other, since people simply thought climate change is to do with decreasing number of polar bears, smoke from factories, carbon dioxide, strong natural catastrophes (such as hurricanes and typhoons). I noticed these 2 villains were mixed together, after I read a book called, 'La Faim Dans le Monde Expliquee a Mon Fils (1999)', written by a former UN investigator of FAO, Jean Ziegler. It made me think of the people doing fund-raising activities along the street, or watch short clips of children starving to death. At that time, I was reading a book that just described 'humans' who are same as me, but born and suffering in futile, barren field with nothing but civil wars, rebels, sheer cold of night, and dust. I felt guilty and shameful of myself, and I wanted to do something more on this as I just believe I could save one or two from there.

That single book drastically changed my life, and led me to start on doing anti-climate change activities. And I think this was the best choice of my life to read that book as I never felt regretful of myself to act like that so far. Now, I am studying political science and international studies in my university, and I chose this major to build up my capability of being more professional and responsible to act against climate change and famine issues that are still ongoing, around the world. I sometimes felt very tired and thought of giving up this as I thought I am very stupid and I lack a lot of things studying this field, but what keeps me study and go is 'the fact' that never stopped and still goes around in Africa and many countries.

To whom it may read this... do not give up what you are doing and thinking of climate change. Though it is not something that is visible and apparently prevalent in front of you, it still keeps killing people and throwing lots and lots of people into the hall of suffer. Remember, a child dies every 3 seconds, because she/he could not eat anything for a long time. Remember, a child loses its eyesight every 5 seconds, because what she/he could drink is very dirty, stagnant pools of rainwater. These facts are just small and tiny parts of climate change, and you would know more about this since what you guys are writing and searching through the Internet and school books are more than what I do exactly know of this.

Think of people, and humbly stand by yourself, and somehow, it will lead you to be a considerate person who can terminate famine, sea level rise, spread of epidemic diseases, and any other problems triggered by climate change.

Wish your best in your future,
Joon Ho
4th E-gen Ambassador
