UPDATE ON THE DROUGHT SITUATION IN KENYA |
---|

As most of you may know, Kenya has been experiencing drought for since early last year. I shone a light on the crisis this has caused during my ambassadorial term. This drought has led to food, water, and health crisis. Farmlands dried up, leading to us having to import food that we normally produce ourselves. Many homes have been left without running water supply, which has led people to turn to water vendors who get water from private boreholes that are not held to the same standards as public water supplies, and this contributed to a cholera outbreak that we're currently trying to contain. The situation has been dire for over a year now, but, luckily, it appears that it soon to change. The rains have started. According to the seasonal and daily meteorological forecasts, majority of the country, with the exception of arid areas such as the North-Eastern province, will receive high amounts of rainfall this short rains season. As a matter of fact, counties have been asked to brace for floods. Where I live, it has been raining every single day of the past week, and people have been rejoicing. What I wish for this rainy season, what I would like to happen, is for the authorities in charge to trap the rain/flood water so as to ensure we have sufficient reservoirs to last us through a drought season, if we are so unfortunate as to experience another, which it is predicted that we will. This drought has brought to the attention of many Kenyans the very real effects of global warming and climate change and I am glad that people are starting to pay attention and asking their representatives to do something. Combating the effects of global warming has to be done at a personal, communal, and governance level otherwise efforts will result to null.

Thanks for the update, Yvonne. Let's hope for the rainfall as well as the governmental mitigation solutions. It's good to hear that people started to draw an attention to the linkage between the drought and climate change whcih we all should.
