by Dewi Retno S | 30-03-2017 23:52 recommendations 0

Sorry for so late report about Junior Eco Engineering Academy. Here is story about my amazing experience in Seoul...

Sunday, February 12, 2017

On Sunday night I and Shirley, participant from Indonesia, went together to Seoul. The flight was delayed about an hour. But we arrived safely in South Korea!

Monday, February 13, 2017

Because it was still early, we have not been able to check in to the hotel. Finally we walked around the hotel and tried bibimpap for lunch. In the afternoon, we checked in and I walked around to buy some souvenirs. At night, worldwide participants and facilitators had dinner together and introduced themselves.

Tuesday, February 14, 2017

In the morning, we were behind of schedule about 40 minutes. From the hotel, we headed to Samsung Global Engineering Center (GEC) using the bus. Soon after arrived at the venue, the event was begins. After opening, the facilitator conduct ice breaking so all participants will know about each other. The idea for ice breaking came from Raneem, facilitator of Saudi Arabia. Participants of the same group have to make as many list the same thing of themselves. My group, Group B, win by 30 points! As a gift, we were allowed to choose the color of the jacket first.

Furthermore, there was a lecture on Sustainable Development by Prof. Chang. We explained about the poverty, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and KOICA.

The second lecture was on Engineering, Technology & Future Appropriate by Prof. Bhandari. Appropriate technology is characterized by low investment, organizational simplicity, high adaptability, less use of natural characteristic, low cost, and high potential for employment. The example is a machine for coconut tree climbing, which memorable for most of us. In addition, each group has to analyze a problem and find ideas for solution.

The third lecture is Water Pollution and Treatment Technology by Mr. Maeng. This lecture was the same as I learned at college in the Environmental Engineering Department. The cause of water pollution is garbage, oil spills, and waste water. The processing technology used is such as sedimentation, coagulation and flocculation and filter. In addition, we also test the water filter is dirty. The results of the water filter can be drunk.

In addition to lectures, each group was also required to make the group's name by 17 goals on the SDGs and make the group's logo.

The second day started with a lecture by Prof. Joon-Won Bae about Petrochemistry Engineering. This lecture explained the petroleum and its products in everyday life. In addition, there was a group activity about petroleum products. Each group was given magazines and classifies petroleum products inside into several groups.

Next was a lecture on Energy of the Future: Renewable Energy by Mr.Kyung-Tae Lee. This lecture explained about the various types of renewable energy such as sunlight, wind, water, geothermal, and biomass.

The last was about Eco City Project by Mr. Sueng-Ho Han. This lecture contained the basic concepts of Eco City. At Eco City Project, each group was asked to build an Eco City from a town with various problems and limited finance. Then each group presented the results of Eco City Project.

After that, was award ceremony for the best group, which achieved by Group D. It's sad, but we already give our best for this project. And the last is the gala dinner!

Thursday, February 16, 2017

Today is the excursion to the Korean Folk Village. Some participants from Korea also joined. We saw a variety of performing arts and see traditional Korean village. In addition, we also tried a variety of rides at the amusement park.

After that, we walked to return to the hotel at Insadong. Then we had dinner together at Myeongdong and given some free time. Sadly, I have to parting with Korean participant before going to the hotel.
