A wonderful day with a wonderful event and a wonderful outcome ever reaped. June 2nd in collaboration with the coronation of his majesty the fourth king of Bhutan, the day is also marked as social forestry day in Bhutan. On that particular day, people highlight the day with plantation, which emphasize the importance of nature.
Coinciding with social forestry day, in capital city Thimphu, a tremendous event was conducted by Bhutan eco Green Initiative Network (BEGIN) which promotes green initiatives in Bhutan in collaboration with the ministry of agriculture and forestry. There were a hundred volunteers from all parts of the country gathered at a capital city on that particular day. To be Guinness is not an easy task, it took 10 days to practice and build stamina within the participants.
On that joyous day all the supporters, volunteers, and judges were gathered at ?Buddha point? located few miles from the Thimphu town. The hilly landscape with rough bushes with a limited number of trees makes the volunteers tough under the hot sunshine. A hundred volunteers were divided into 10 groups each group holding ten members. Each group was distributed with 5000 saplings and each member was supposed to plant 500 trees in 60 minutes. At around 9 am all the volunteers gathered to their respective area with judges after them. Then from the top of the hill, the official judges Mr. Patel and Dr. Attila Dahlgran ordered to start the plantation.
Then our planters hurried without rest. It was around 55 minutes and some of the groups were done and when it was exactly 60 minute, all the participants gathered together out of a field. The judges counted the planted saplings and out of 50000 saplings, 49672 were qualified, which smashed the previous record made by India, UK, Australia, China, Mexico, and Ireland. The tree species were blue pine and cypress.
Bhutan for the first time attempted the Guinness world record and holds the title. It was initiated by royal patron queen mother Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck to commemorate the 60th birth anniversary of the fourth king of Bhutan Jigme Singye Wangchuk. With everyone?s helping hand the event was successful and I am proud to be one of the hundred volunteers. Shape your thought to shape your action I assure that we can challenge the climate change.
Lastly but not the least I would apologize for the late update since I was not familiar with Tunza eco generation platform but its better late than never.
