?How many of you litter on the roads??, we asked the 75 students in front of us. Silence. Slowly almost all of them sheepishly raised their hands. Therein lies the problem, we thought to ourselves. Our entire talk on ?Sustainability? would be rendered redundant if we didn?t address the more basic issues. On a bright Monday morning, E3 visited the Samarpan School in Kishangarh village (near Vasant Kunj) to talk about environmental issues. As expected we came back humbled and a tad bit wiser!
The day was started by dividing the students into 3 groups for our sessions on Water, Biodiversity and Energy. The E3 team members conducted activities and spoke to the kids in their respective classrooms. The ?Water Group? focused on understanding issues like Water Scarcity, Water Conservation and the role of water in our everyday life. The ?Energy Group? focused on Renewable Energy, the concept of an E-Base and Energy Conservation tips. The Biodiversity group saw videos on urban biodiversity and India?s Natural Heritage followed by a discussion on the threats to biodiversity.
Aashish Beergi then joined us as he proceeded to regale the children with his stories on Cricket and deftly connected it to Sustainability and his entrepreneurial journey. The kids couldn?t get enough of his tales as they excitedly pestered him to tell them more, much to the dismay of their teachers who never saw such interest during Math Lessons! The Principal, Mrs. Sherna Wadia, then graciously took our team on a short tour of the school compound. She showed us the spic and span school kitchen that provides meals to 125 students daily. We saw the newly opened Crèche and Center where Women are given vocational training. But what stole the show was the room made up of waste plastic bottles filled with mud made by the students themselves! It is these kinds examples that reinforce our will to work and make our efforts worthwhile?
