Sharing Green Living School Kit

by | 09-06-2015 21:18 recommendations 0

On 5th June i.e. World Environment Day (WED) 2015, I had the privilege of sharing  Green Living School Kit along with formation of Tunza Eco- Club in Janapriya Public School,Chitwan Nepal. I have shared the detail report about formation of Eco- club in Ambassador Report and in this World Report I would like to share about Green Living School Kit developed by the Centre for Environment Education (CEE) India with support from Samsung Engineering.

Beforehand I had already had a thorough look at both the resources i.e. Understanding Green living pdf file and ppt file for presentation downloaded from Tunza Eco- generation.  So, with laptops and necessary arrangement I along with a brother and two sisters from my university, who were keen to assist me walked towards school and made the necessary arrangements.  The event was set for students of Grade 9 and there were a total of 38 students. First of all I introduced myself (I was so happy to see many students recognizing me as I used to be a part time teacher in that school before two years). Then after, I introduced Eco- generation as a successful CSR program of Samsung Engineering. I thanked principal of the school Mr. Bhanu Aryal, (who sat along with the students for the session) for letting us this opportunity. I began with setting the tone- match the right word, it was fun and students were very interactive.

Then after, it was time for the presentation. I tried my best to clarify their quest of green living through those PowerPoint slides. Students also raised questions at the points they had doubt and I clarified with references and examples. The presentation session concluded with the famous quote of Mahatma Gandhi which was included the ppt file "Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's need but not every man's greed".  Afterwards it was time for survey consisting of 27 questions to raise awareness and know about how well the students are adopted to Green Living in reality. Instead of printing the survey sheets I handed one blank sheet to each student and then displayed the questions through power point. I explained each question and then asked them to write only answers in that single sheet using both sides. I did so as it would save papers from printing and less wastage, cost effective too.

Every student scored more than 60 and the highest scorer was 76. I handed over a copy, chocolate and a pen as a prize for the winner. Finally, it was a time for feedback. I was so happy to read the feedback thanking for the event as it was the first solely eco- event they ever had till now.  On average they had no negative comments as according to them they really loved learning through visual means and interactive sessions.

It took nearly 1.25 hours for all this, as I had to explain each survey questions through the power point.

Last but not the least, I would like to thank Principal Mr. Aryal who was so supportive about the event and he himself sat with students and listened so eagerly. Also, thank you to those brother and sisters who facilitated me in entire session. Obviously, Thank you beloved Eco- generation for providing this effective, meaningful and attractive school kit.

Dear Rin, I would love to answer your questions-
-Yeah I translated the content of green living school while sharing explaining to the students but I showed the same ppt as students could understand English also.
-No, I didn't give the hard copy to the students as the only printer at my community was not functioning and needed some days for repair. Moreover, I thought hard copies will create lots of e- wastes.
-On June 3rd, I visited the Prinicpal and discussed about my plan and objectives. I didn't submit a proposal. Actually, it was the school where I worked as part time teacher 2 years ago.
Thank you for your kind wishes :)

Dear Bindu, I have some questions related to your report, I hope you won't mind to answer these questions.

    1. Did you translate the content of Green Living School Kit into local language? Or did you deliver in English?

    2. Did you give hard copy to students or not?

    3. On how you can approach school headmaster to allow the activity? Did you submit a proposal before or ?

Since I have problem to approach schools in my place and I lack of confidence, I wish you can give me some advices through this :)

Thanks a lot Bindu, I wish you will be the winner of current monthly event :D
