COP in my city- Chitwan, Nepal

by | 26-11-2014 15:28 recommendations 0

Climate change being a global threat that requires action with urgency to adapt/mitigate its adverse effects. Since 1995, annually representatives of more than hundred countries have been participating in Conference of Parties (COP) to ensure united action against climate change. COP in my city is an initiative of CliMates ( a global student network) which is aimed at bridging the gap between international climate negotiations and youth participation in climate change.

November 15, 2014 COP in my city- Chitwan Nepal was organized successfully with active participation of twenty two youths from various academic backgrounds. Program lasted for about four hours. Me, Bindu Bhandari introduced participants about climate change and its current status in Nepal and the concept of COP in my city. Mr. Ashish Niraula then, summarized the timeline and outcomes of nineteen COP conducted till now. The most interesting part was simulation.

In simulation participants were grouped as representative of Annex- I,II countries (industrialized nations and economies in transition), Least developed countries (LDC), Non- Annex I (developing countries), IgO/ NGO. Each group put forward the problems they are facing, solutions they are seeking for and their commitments for reducing Green House Gas (GHG) concentrations. After agreement of different parties (groups) final statement was presented by a participant who was playing the role of UN General Secretary.

In this way COP in my city- Chitwan Nepal was successfully organized with active participation of enthusiastic youths. The simulation triggered the sense of responsibility and youth action for climate change among participants.

The youth should pay attention to the climate change because it has arrived at a critical point. As ex vice president of the USA, Al Gore, demonstrates in his many presentations of the greenhouse effect on the climate, if we continue harming our environment, it will eventually harm us too. The preservation of our environment means the preservation of humankind.

Thanks , Bindu , for sharing vividly about this great event. Such conferences offer an ideal platform to youngsters for discussion & brain storming over common issues(climate change issues in this case) and finding innovative solutions and jointly committing towards common cause. 22 youths from different academic backgrounds would have been good resource for solutions .
