As a part of giving back to the society, I participated in an event organized recently in Dubai. The event was very well organized, from the exciting games, food stalls and various activities. The picture shows the amount of trash, garbage, plastic bottles, polythene bags and wrappers that mounted after the event on the roads and footpaths. I was disheartened to see that before spotlessly clean area turned into a garbage dump. This shows that people are unaware and careless of their environment and lack civic sense. This diminishes our aim to be the one of the cleanest cities of the world. Individuals should understand their responsibility and use the bins that are placed to use them and not just continue littering in public. I want to ask this question that if you are at your home, do you litter your house the same way as this place? No. We throw the litter in the bin, wherever the bin is placed, then why should our environment suffer. People are concerned how dirty their houses may look but have no guilt of littering in public places. Also, this trash left on the road would be picked up by the workers. Think how much time would it take. It is a major public health and safety hazard as it attracts disease causing insects and is also a major cause of injuries caused by discarded cans and broken bottles. The most important is that it is diminishing the aesthetic appearance of public places. We as individuals should spread awareness and try and educate those around us against littering in public. Especially the children, who are our future, should be taught to throw litter in bins right from school days. The best way to prevent this irresponsible behaviour of people from littering in public places is by creating awareness.

true Aaditya I also witnessed the above events and raised concerns even at earth hour walkathon.

Thanks for highlighting this problem Mohit. I did not attend this event but have been noticing a similar scene at many public events. I have seen this issue at the after race concerts in Formula 1 Races in Abu Dhabi for the past 3 years. I even wrote to the F1 organisers requesting a stricter code for the people. Most disturbing was the fact that this happened also at the Earth Day Walkathon organised by Beeah in Sharjah, in April last year. Small Plastic Water Bottles were being distributed freely to the walk participants and people were simply throwing them around littering the place and wasting water- when they had come to walk for the Earth! Alot needs to be learnt and taught...

If each and every man even start to manage the waste he produces, the earth would have been very beautiful. Here, it's necessary to twist the biasness in management of shelter and environment. Thank you Mohit for sharing

Right Mohit. Remember we all carried our waste till we found the dustbin. People could have done the same.

Thanks for highlighting this, Mohit. I feel authorities didn't provide enough facilities for people to throw their trash . They should have put bins , should have installed the instruction boards saying "Waste throwers would be fined" etc. This is not the 1st time Standard Chartered run was organised . Looks like this year , arrangement was the worst. This also shows that people are not self conscious and they need to be reminded /alerted. Very sad.
people are unaware and careless of their environment and lack civic sense. T

Thanks Christy,Smriti.
True Gaa Bhin Ryu,Konstantinos ,we can encourage people who litter in events like this to accept responsibility for their actions it can make a lot of difference.Accepting responsibility for ones own actions is must.

I totally agree. In my opinion we should inform people who go to those events that workers are not supposed to clean all their litter, so they wouldn't take it for granted.

Yeah..Last time our school visited a park for sports activity,
we were supposed to clean up all the mess in the park before and after.
but the students ended up throwing food waste, paper, wrappers, and cans away
it was a total mess and environmental failure

I agree that awareness is a way to environment protection, thanks for sharing.

True Raunak, use of plastic should be completely banned.
Posted 03-02-2014 14:28
Agreed. It was a great mess. I think the reason was lack of bins & excessive use of plastic.
