by | 17-07-2013 16:27 recommendations 0

Diclofenac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammtory drug(NSAID) used to reduce pain and inflammation.Use of Diclofenac in animals has been reported to have led to sharp decline in the vulture population. Vulture die of kidney and lungs failure after consuming animal carcass contaminated with diclofenac.
In Nepal, vulture has its unique cultural importance besides its ecological significance.Buddhist practice vulture as 'sky burial' where human dead bodies are placed in open place to be consumed by scavenging creatures like vulture. The effect of diclofenac drug in vulture was realized  later by Government of Nepal, therefore it was  formally banned in 2006.Vulture has a great role in ecology. They are natural scavenger, they clean our environment. For the conservation of vulture illegal practice of buying and selling of diclofenac drug should be stopped. Instead of using diclofenac meloxicam can be used for treating cattle which never harm the bird.
