The Palm Jumeirah Dubai– often referred to as the eighth wonder of the world is inspired also to ADAPT TO CLIMATE CHANGE THROUGH WATER CONSERVATION- By Simran Vedvyas, Dubai- United Arab Emirates I attended a very inspiring and interesting community lecture last evening with aim to have a better insight and find ways in which more water can be conserved and renewed and what are the alternate sources of energy that can be looked upon successfully for a greener, sustainable tomorrow. I wish to share this with the forum members This community lecture helped to educate and highlight the importance of water management and the responsible ways in which water can be managed, community sustainability and resiliency given the large scale urban migration phenomena and the global importance of environmental education at all levels. The water situation in the region is of great concern because we face water scarcity. Managing the supply and demand side are both equally essential. Everything around us is interconnected. We source our clean potable water from desalinating sea water. The process of desalinating and also the waste water management was explained and discussed in a very simple and understandable manner. An amazing and detailed description about the huge sewage treatment plant of Palm Jumeirah – often referred to as the eighth wonder of the world, was also used to explain the modules and functioning. THE MOST INTERESTING FACT WAS THAT THE PLANT CAN BE CONTROLLED ON-SITE OR REMOTELY BY COMPUTERIZED SYSTEM AND ALSO THAT THE ENVIRONMENT IS ODOUR FREE, SO EVEN IF YOU WALK THERE THE AIR IS CLEAN. The Palm Jumeirah is an artificial archipelago created using land reclamation and its total area is larger than 800 football pitches, now imagine the huge sewage plant built by digging it further deep, so it eventually becomes underground. I also got an insight about nuclear power aided by hybrid power to provide the running power needed for the plant. The event was well-attended by more than 100 students members from the public sector and corporate members.
