Saving the Mangroves by Kehkashan Basu

Mangroves form a very important part of our ecosystem , here in Dubai . They help to maintain the balance in our biosphere. However , these mangroves are under constant threat from algae . These algae multiply rapidly and choke the mangroves which slowly wilt and die . As a member of a local marine conservation NGO in Dubai, I took part in removing the algae from the mangroves , thereby ensuring their conservation. It was a very painstaking and literally backbreaking exercise since once has to bend down for hours while standing in water to rid the mangroves of algae. This green algae was collected and piled up in a dump on the beachside . This activity of cleaning up the algae allows the mangroves to breathe and survive .
