Extraordinarily Extravagant: Class in a Boat

by | 18-11-2014 14:54 recommendations 0

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), which is the main agency in protecting and conserving the natural resources in our country, and the Divine Word College of Calapan (DWCC) launched on Friday the Bangklase: Klase sa Bangka, Ibang Klase project (BANGKLASE which sounds like Extraordinarily extravagant: Class in a boat). It is a unique way to inspire nature-based approach to environmental education using as classroom the 8,125-hectare Naujan Lake in Oriental Mindoro province.- DENR website

DENR Secretary Ramon J.P. Paje established and agreed this project regarding education for the youth as well as environmental awareness. He stated that BAGKLASE breathes new life to government efforts to inspire deeper and wider interest in Philippine environmentalism. He also added that under this innovative project, students are taught within the context of actual experience, an opportunity missed when taught in a conventional classroom setting.

This new innovative project is an educational shipboard, carrying up to 150 people, which promotes environmental education, eco-tourism development and public awareness of the lake preservation/protection and biodiversity conservation, specifically the Naujan Lake and the species inside

The lake was said to be under the provision and authority of the government- National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS) pursuant to the NIPAS Act of 1992 or Republic Act 7586. Due to its high biodiversity and rich endemism, it is already protected under the supervision and management of the Local Government Unit.

WOW! this sounds cool -educational shipboard. I agree that this must be more interesting as compared to conventional class rooms. Practical aspects can also be taught while on the boat. Thanks for sharing , Jekk

Yes Rohan. That is the practice we want to observe. I believe there is rule on no littering on rivers. But thanks for your comment Rohan :) you made me smile on that

Well reported Jekk. The boat can serve as practical training platform. Good idea.
But the river must not be polluted by the students, it must be taken care of. As littering is inevitable at this scale.

Thanks for your question Nayheak. By the way, I believe the water is not smelly for it is conserved and well protected by the government and the communities around the lake. :)

There have many water-animals, species, fishes in this lake. My question is: how you can keep smelling from this water to avoid effect to tourists/visitors ?

Hello Ruth.Thank you for your comments. Yes, this should be replicated for this idea is unique and very useful. I believe students will be refined through environmental education inside the boat throughtout the sessions. Therefore, they will be conscious and aware not to throw wastes on bodies of water. :)

hence, we should teach the students to have a sense of social responsability towards the enviroment c: just an observation.

This boat, however, can be disadvantageous if students don't keep any type of waste inside the boat. you wouldn't want to pollute the water! c:
