''Humanity Might Be Doomed'' , Stephen Hawking |
---|
Stephen Hawking , a world renowned physicist and cosmologist who has done groundbreaking work on general relativity and black holes, and more importantly gave us hope that there is a parallel universe. In his recent interview Stephen Hawking discusses all the different ways humans might bring about their own demise. Prof Stephen Hawking says that the future and survival of humanity is in great danger because of advancements in science, on the other hand he says that science is the only way out of the mess we –especially the ruling class — have made of our world. Hawking cites ?nuclear war, global warming, and genetically-modified viruses? as the three very imminent threats we face in modern times. Hawkings added , ?Although the chance of a disaster to planet Earth in a given year might be quite low, it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next thousand or ten thousand years. By that time, we should have spread out into space, and to other stars, so a disaster on Earth would not mean the end of the human race. However, we will not establish self-sustaining colonies in space for at least the next hundred years, so we have to be very careful in this period.? This isn?t the first time that Hawking has talked doomsday and space exploration in one breath. Last summer, he was among 1,000+ artificial intelligence experts who signed an open letter about the weaponization of robots and the ongoing ?military artificial intelligence arms race? among the world?s military powers. He predicts that these robots will spell the end of humanity as we know it. All in all, Hawking has voiced several warnings over the past few years. The one thing all his cautionary tales have in common is Hawking?s belief that the ruling elites? quest for profits will negatively impact all humans and eventually bring about our end. Hawking believes we should still forge ahead with scientific and technological advancement because human beings will find a way to cope with the disasters left behind as he says, ?We are not going to stop making progress, or reverse it, so we have to recognize the dangers and control them,? he stated. ?I?m an optimist, and I believe we can. It?s important to ensure that these changes are heading in the right directions. In a democratic society, this means that everyone needs to have a basic understanding of science to make informed decisions about the future. So communicate plainly what you are trying to do in science, and who knows, you might even end up understanding it yourself.? Source : www.inverse.com BBC News
