World Blood Donar Day

by | 15-06-2013 02:19 recommendations 0

World Blood Donor Day is an annual event highlighting the need to regularly give blood to prevent shortages in hospitals and clinics. Blood Donor Day is celebrated every 14th of June and it encourages people to give blood and save lives without asking for anything in return. Blood donor day serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood.
The theme this year is "Give the gift of life: donate blood". This year the campaign aims to:
• Thank blood donors for their life-saving donations
• Promote voluntary unpaid blood donation and
• Convince ministries of health to commit to achieve self-sufficiency in safe blood and blood products based on 100% voluntary unpaid blood donation.
With the slogan "Give the gift of life: donate blood", this year?s campaign, the 10th anniversary of World Blood Donor Day, will focus on the value of donated blood to the patient, not only in saving life, but also in helping people live longer and more productive lives.
• Transfusion of blood and blood products helps save millions of lives every year. It can help patients suffering from life-threatening conditions live longer and with higher quality of life, and supports complex medical and surgical procedures.
• The most precious gift that we humans can give each other is the donation of blood, a gift that can save lives and give a new lease of life to many persons in need. The World Health Organization in league with international blood donor agencies recognizes and in appreciation of blood donors, who are voluntary and unpaid, celebrates the World Blood Donor Day on June 14th every year. This day also marks the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, who discovered the ABO blood group system and was awarded the Nobel Prize for it. The day also focuses on the importance of donating blood, motivating more people to donate blood and the need to clear misconceptions about blood donations. The day also emphasizes the need for blood especially in developing countries where there are fewer than 10 donations per thousand people and the need for blood is high.
• 107 millionblood donations every year.
• 65%of blood transfusions in low-income countries are given to children under five years of age.
• As per WHO 2020 is the target year for all countries to obtain 100% of blood supplies from voluntary unpaid donors.
• A single unit of donated blood can save up to three lives.
• Regular voluntary blood donors are the safest source of blood, as there are fewer bloodborne infections among these donors than among people who donate for family members in emergencies or who give blood for payment.
• In low- and middle-income countries, the greatest use of donated blood is for pregnancy-related complications and severe childhood anaemia.
• In high-income countries, transfusion is most commonly used for supportive care in heart surgery, transplant surgery, massive trauma and cancer therapy.
• Providing safe and adequate blood through well-organized, national blood systems should be an integral part of every country?s national health-care policy.
• The need for blood and blood products is increasing every year, and many patients requiring life-saving transfusion do not have timely access to safe blood and blood products.
