UAE working hard to reduce waste |

I was alarmed to read in the National Newpaper (5th July) that the UAE currently has one of the highest rate of waste per capita in the world. I think, the reason is that people are blissfully unaware of the dangers of overgrowing landfills and also there have not been many waste management facilities available to take care of the needs of the population. Further, the government has not been too strict in implementing waste management and recycling programs. But not any more. UAE is working hard to reduce its waste generation and promoting recycling campaigns. In Sharjah, the municipal company Bee'ah recycles about 52 per cent of the emirate's waste. Recycling schemes are also being implemented in some neighbourhoods of Abu Dhabi, although the emirate is still unable to reprocess some of the materials collected. In Dubai, many malls, hotels and private residential compounds have recognised that recycling schemes can generate income and boost their image. Dubai Municipality introduced regulations requiring shopping malls to run recycling schemes from February this year. Let us hope that together we will be able to reduce our carbon footprint.
