Global Youth Eco-Leadership Summit 2016 Experience

Being a part of the 2016 Global Youth Eco-Leadership Summit in Korea is one of the most amazing memories of my life. My name is Chayanun Kongfahpakdipong, I'm from Thailand and last month, me and my friend attended the 2016 GYELS. We met many people from around the world who shares the same goal as us, to save our Earth.

The summit take place at Seoul, Korea. The first day, we arrived at the airport and met our guide, Sophie. We went to a restaurant near our hotel and ate dinner there. We introduced ourselves and after dinner ,and the warm welcome of the staff members and our chairperon, Mr. Luiz Bispo, we went back to our hotel called, Ramada Seoul hotel.  We quickly checked in and went to our rooms to get some rest.

The second day we woke up and to our surprise, it was snowing! We ate breakfast at our hotel and head to Seoul National University (SNU). We registered, got our name tags and assigned seats. We listened to 4 lectures that day, all concerning the topic sustainable energy. All of them were very interesting such as the first zero energy housing complex in Korea and efforts to make sustainable energy in practice in the EU and Denmark. We had sandwiches for lunch and after the lectures, Sophie took us to a restaurant for dinner.

We head back to SNU on the third day, but when we arrived, we were escorted into a room called, Glocal Hall. Tables are arranged in groups and we sat at tables according to our team. I was in team F, my friend from Thailand was in team C. In each team, there are 5 different stakeholders: developed countries, developing countries, industries, academic experts, and NGOs. It was also the day we would get to meet with the Korean delegates. They are all very nice and friendly and we soon become friends. A lecture was also given that day by Dr. Hana Kim, to give us an idea about what we can do as stakeholders.

After designing our own team flag, we went into our stakeholders groups (according to roles). We had a discussion and a little debate within our group, we exchanged notes and discuss what we can do to help our environment regarding the climate change happening right now. Then we had pizza for lunch and the secret angel selection ceremony.

After the stakeholders discussion, we went back to our team and present our ideas of what we can do as we are stakeholders. We are required to do a report and presentation draft, the real presentation has to be finished by tomorrow (28th January 2016). We quickly brainstorm and wrote down everything we had. Within 1 hour, the report and the presentation draft must be done. It was done. My best friend, and our team leader, Patricia, was very happy and we decided to finish our presentation that very night.

On the fourth day, after a very long (and fun) night, we went to Everland! An amusement park in Korea. We had lots of fun at Everland, we ate lunch there and then we went to Samsung Engineering Head Quarters. At Samsung Engineering Head Quarters, we were given a brief tour about its history and its amazing program to donate books. We were then inside a small hall. We were seated according to our teams, and when Mr. Luiz started to call the groups out to present, we were really nervous and excited as it was getting closer to our team. Every team did their best and when the results came out we were shocked to won one of the prizes! Our team leader, Patricia said to us that she?s very proud of our team and I could see her beaming that whole day. Then came the individual presentation and at dinner time, we reveal our secret angels and exchange gifts. It was a very memorable night.

On our last day together, we were very sad to part but we promised to keep contact each other and to do the best we can to raise awareness in other people about climate change and to take actions. When we came back, everyone still contact each other, many of us sent back pictures of what they did after they came back from Korea. I am very thankful for all supporters and sponsors of this summit. It is the best start for our new year 2016.

    Dear Pat,

Thank you for everything. I never before, met someone who I grew attached to as quickly as you. It was that night when I came over to your room and did the presentation with you. I'm so happy and proud to called you my best friend too. As your team mate, I never regret the decision to choose you as our team leader, our team fantastic is indeed fantastic. It was so funny, looking back at the time we're about to give our presentation, I looked around and everyone was so calm, then I looked at you and you represented exactly what I was feeling. It's magical to find someone who shares the same obsession as you, think like you, to sum it up, someone like you. Like you said, we constantly say the same things, it's definitely not a coincidence. And about waking me up, it's ok, it was quite funny, because I was looking outside and thought you two prank me, but then I saw you two running and it was too funny, I'm not mad at all. Thanks for being my fabulous and fantastic friend. I really want to meet you guys again, and it's almost a month since we met. I will never forget you and Vanessa. As you said, until we meet again. :)

    Dear Jingle,
What an amazing report! I miss you so very much, Jingle. I'm so proud and happy to call you my best friend. As I told you before, I talk about you every single day to my friends and family that they got bored hahaha. I'm so proud of Team Fantastic for winning one of the awards and I am beyond proud of you for winning the individual competition. You're such a great friend and we constantly say the same things in chat and I don't think it's a coincidence. Great minds think alike after all haha. I miss talking to you till late night (face to face) and we're so sorry for waking you up that night when we got locked outside (oops).
I'm so grateful to have a friend like you and I miss you so very much. Hopefully I can see you soon (still trying to convince my family to go to Bangkok this year haha). It's incredible how five days could bring us so close together and the amount of memories we made in just those short 5 days were unbelievable. I miss our squad so much and I miss singing 'wildest dreams' in our terrible voices. I just hope we can meet soon. Until we meet again :)
