Being a student of environmental science, community activities are integral part of my curriculum. Last week, we conducted a Leadership Development Training on Environment programs in different schools as part of our aforesaid community activities. Final day of the program was successfully held on Kalika Secondary Boarding School of Jyotinagar. All the students selected from different schools on the previous days were divided into groups and assigned a certain task including Discussion, Solid waste management, Drama, Singing and finally, Notice.Me and my partner Unnata Timalsina were chosen the mentor of solid waste management team. We had three boys and three girls on our team, each from a different school to ensure there was interaction among people from different groups. We decided to present our ideas on the subject to our audience in the form of an act. So, after some discussions among the group and with some help from Prakriti Dhakal, a script was prepared on the given theme. One of the students Sujan Adhikari posed as an uneducated villager whose wife Sandhya Tamang was having stomach-ache. Other two students, Prashant Sharma and Purnima Rana were playing the role of another couple in the neighbourhood, but an educated one. And Kritan Dhakal and Rita Dhakal were made the village doctor and nurse respectively. With the help of the above cast, we presented a play portraying how the surrounding of the house being dirty had direct effects on the health issues. We presented ways to keep the surrounding clean and methods to manage solid wastes, both degradable and non degradable in different ways. In the same act, we also included the importance of washing hands with soap and water and the right way to do it.The day was overall a success. Not only did we spread awareness among people but we also included them in doing so, helping them see how each of us can play a part. The day was concluded with each of the participants receiving a participation certificate.
