Natural calamities aggravated by climate impacts are increasing intra-country migration of people in South Asia, a study report says.
According to the report published in Dhaka on Sunday, increase in temperature and variations in rainfall are affecting the lives and livelihoods of people in Bangladesh.
The International Organization for Migration study was conducted in Bangladesh, the Maldives and Nepal to assess climate change, environmental degradation and migration nexus in South Asia.
The research findings show that the coastal districts in Bangladesh are highly vulnerable to cyclones, storm surges, tidal floods, salinity intrusion and sea-level rise. The report says the change of climate and degradation of environment will further contribute to the displacement of people living in South-Asia. The field level research found variations in temperature and rainfall in recent decades.Environmental degradation, including pollution of surface water and groundwater, deforestation, freshwater scarcity, decline in groundwater level is also affecting the nations, the report says.
