Animal Rights vs. Animal Welfare

by Samar Gharti | 27-02-2020 01:54 recommendations 0

The terms "animal rights" and "animal welfare" are often used interchangeably, but there is actually a significant difference between the two.

It boils down to the difference between " larger cages "and"empty cages". Those who believe in animal welfare are satisfied with larger cages, but those who support animal rights want empty cages.

Those who believe in animal welfare believe that it is acceptable to use animals as long as we do so "with humanity". This means that it is acceptable for chickens to be confined to laying eggs until they are in a cage. They believe that it is OK to test products on animals as long as they receive painkillers. They also believe that zoos and circuses are OK if animals are treated "kindly".

The challenge of this way of thinking is that it is impossible to confine an animal or use it in any capacity and be truly human. Being confined in a closed barn can be more humane than being in a cage the size of a piece of paper, but chickens are always deprived of sun and fresh air. Having injections of pain medications can make experiments on monkeys a little more bearable, but they are always open, burned and confined in cages without interaction with other animals.

People who believe in animal rights fight against industrial livestock, animal experiments, fur farms, circuses, etc. they do not believe that we have the right to steal animals and confine them to our advantage.

I strongly believe in animal rights. I have spent time with many animals and I know they are smart and can suffer. One of my favorite quotes about animal rights is:

The question is not: "can they reason?"ni "can they speak?", but "can they suffer?"

There is no doubt that animals can suffer. If you do not currently believe in animal rights, I hope this article will make you stop and think. By simply making simple life choices, you can change the world for so many animals that suffer unnecessarily for our consumption and entertainment.
