Urban Rooftop Farming-A Food Security Measure

by Sahara Shrestha | 23-04-2020 03:33 recommendations 0

Hello and Warm Namaste Everyone here from Nepal. Hope you all are doing great and  staying immune right now. HAPPY EARTH DAY 2020.Climate action is the main theme of 50th Earth Day.
So,On this very occasion I would like to share about my small rooftop cultivation at my home. Rooftop Farming can be practiced in the balcony, rooftop where you receive ample amount of sunlight. Chilli, coriander, brinjal,  fababean, tomato strawberries, pepinomelons can be easily grown. However some climber like cucumbers, beans can also be cultivated with proper management techniques.Flowers, medicinal herbs and indoor plants are used to beautifully decorate  the balconies , room, and corridor. For this , we need plastic pots of required size (depends on optimum root coverage) having drainage hole and the potting mixture. You can select plant as per the climate, season and obviously your choice. In Nepal, people are getting allowance for doing rooftop farming in the capital which is a great step put forward by government.
And due to COVID-19 pandemic , it is presumed around 25 crores people will be suffering from hunger in near future. So rooftop farming can be very good way out for future food security.
I have cultivated chilli, cucumbers and cow pea beans for this season and pepinomelons.
Urban rooftop farming have lots of advantage:
1.Fresh vegetables and fruits can regularly be consumed.
2.Safe and pesticides free vegetables keeps us free from various dangerous diseases like cancer, tumor.
3. You dont have to rely on the market products thus ensuring food security.
4. Having Green and clean  environment keeps us mentally and spiritually healthy.
5. Most importantly, in urban areas by cultivating plants like sensivaria, syngonium. bottlebrush we can reduce carbon dioxide releasing to the atmosphere and give out more oxygen .
6.Utilizing plastic utensils, we reduce the plastics waste and here we take small step towards leaving low carbon footprints.

As I always believe, everyone of our step counts, on this earth day, lets vow to make sure to take steady and green steps to bring out global green climate. Our steps can be small, but make sure it is clean and green. Lets remember, The Earth is our only home and our every step counts either clean or mean. Choice is all ours.

Green Cheers.

Thank You.

    Hello Sahara,

Nice to know about rooftop farming. thank you for sharing the information as recently we are doing our research and case study on rooftop farming and peoples perception about it.
Due to pandemic nowadays, we could see more green roofs than before.
Also, these rooftop gardens are really of very wide scope than we think. they have significant from climate change to food security and urban rain water run-off problems.
sooner, i complete my work i will share some of my findings here in tunza.

Thank you for more recent update.

    Regards,
    Sandesh
