En-ROADS Climate Simulator

by Sandhya Adhikari | 01-10-2020 02:08 recommendations 0

We are used to hear climate is changing, climate is changing and we need the appropriate action guided strategy for mitigation of climate change, we act we work because we have a fierce and valiant determination for the protection of the mother earth  but have we ever just imagined and thought what can be  the scientific strategy for climate change mitigation?Does all that action that we are doing today is enough for the mitigation of the climate change? The answer is still controversial and still not satisfactory. But back to few week while organizing Youth Conference at Nepal with Climate Action as one of the major topic, I got a chance to interact with Dr. Bindu Bhandari one of the professional climate activist who has contributed alot for this issue. Personally I am the one who is much inspired by her works, her dynamic personalities. She was one of the spokesperson on climate Change and I got a chance to learn about En-Roads climate Simulator.  I don¡¯t know that everyone is either well known about the topic or not but I was completely unknown about the topic and tool before. I am very thankful to her for presenting this simulator at provincial youth Conference that we had hosted some week  before.  I has also ever worked for the climate advocacy here at my region so I thought to learn more about this and I went surfing google, you tube and websites. I had also taken training on using this simulator from climate interactive. I am very glad to share with you all that  I will be using this simulator very soon and going to host event both in virtual platform as well as in a physical platform. Virtually soon after my some academic commitment, I will be organizing En-Roads Climate Workshop here at my country. Soon after the pandemic ends I will host En-ROADS MUN workshop as a game play at my university. Now let me describe about this simulator:

En-ROADS is a transparent, freely available, policy simulation model that provides policymakers, educators, businesses, the media and the public with the ability to explore for themselves like consequence of energy, economic growth, land use, and other policies and uncertainties with the goal of improving their understanding on climate change. This simulation was developed by climate interactive, ventana system and MIT Sloan, which runs on an ordinary laptop in a fraction of second. It has been developed with the best available data and sciences, calibrated against a wide range of existing integrated assessment, climate and energy. Wider audience has used this simulator including member of US congress, HSBC bank, the lewlett foundation, local community group, the UN secretary General¡¯s office, government of china, leading science educator Bill Nye and many more climate Activities. It works on the data rather than any predictions. En-ROADS is the system dynamics model that mainly focus on how change in the energy, economic and public policy systems could affect green house emission and climate outcomes, Behind the simulator is an extensive study of the literature of important factors such as delay times, progress ratios, price sensitivities, historic growth of energy sources and energy efficiency potentials. En-ROADS stands for Energy Rapid Overview and Decision Support. En-ROADS is a high order, non linear differential equation model built originally and contemporaneously in Vensim Software. When the users moves a slider, the En-ROADS application calculates the results from  -14000 equations over 110 years from 1990 to 2100 in 60 millisecond. Climate Model projection were summeriated in the 2007 Fourth Assessment Report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, they indicated that during the 21st century the global surface temperature is likely to rise a further 1.1 to 2.9 degree celsius for lower emission scenario and 2.4 to 6. degree celsius for their highest. For minimizing the temperature up to 1.5 -1.8 degree celsius  only the single factor is not responsible, combined factors are responsible like highly subsidizing renewables, increasing carbon prices, high tax on coal, natural gases, enforcing nuclear plant, reducing methane emissions,  emphasizing electrifications and so on.

I really found this tool much applicable and which is so necessary in a developing nation like ours if we genuinely wants to work in the climate change field, I am on a learning phase and if any of my fellow ambassador finds it interesting and want to learn more I will be more than happy enough to share you all the details I am well known!! Thanks to Tunza Eco Generation for shaping me a determinant eco warrior and climate Activist. I want to save this earth not for the future Generation but for my generation and hand it safely to coming generation. And I believe together we can¡¦
