How being a vegetarian can help combat climate change.

Everyone knows about climate change, the process by which earth's atmosphere is heating up and sea levels are increasing as a result of increased levels of carbon dioxide in the air. But one thing that not many of us know is that rearing livestock can play a very significant role in increasing climate change. So, lets take a step back and examine how this actually works.

Firstly, everyone knows that climate change is caused by carbon dioxide, as it does not let the sun's rays reflect out back into the atmosphere. But, many other gases exist which have the same effect as carbon dioxide. One of these gases is methane, which is 80 times more potent that carbon dioxide at warming the atmosphere. But how is increased amount of methane in the atmosphere linked with eating non-vegetarian food at home ?

Well, eating non-vegetarian requires the raising and rearing of a huge number of livestock in animal rearing centers. This increased number of livestock and farm animals raises your carbon footprint as they are much costlier to feed and produce as compared to agriculture. The exact cause of this is due to energy loss in trophic level energy transfer which I will explore in another article.

However, the main way that livestock impacts climate change is not solely by raising your carbon footprint. Livestock rearing and cows in particular are responsible for producing a major portion of atmospheric methane, which is a potent greenhouse gas. This traps the heat of the sun's rays within the atmosphere leading to a significant increase in temperature over time.

There is no way to produce less methane, but there is a way to reduce humanity's dependence on cows: By converting to vegetarian. I hope this has taught you a lesson when it comes to reducing your contribution to climate change. Please try to spread this information on to maximize its impact !
