I live in the huge and diverse country of India, which is one of the most populous countries in the world. Every time I travel to the national capital of New Delhi, there is always one characteristic sight that greets me just at the city's outskirts: A Huge Mountain of Waste ! Obviously this is a landfill, one of the cheapest ways to dispose of waste. However, there are many problems when it comes to disposing waste like this.
One of the main problems with standard landfills is that it destroys the visual scenery of particular area, and its stench can be noticed hundreds of meters away. Apart from this, landfills have many other problems. They act as breeding ground for various disease carrying vectors, and when it rains, the loose and unpacked waste on the landfill can easily be carried away by water currents, which can greatly contaminate surrounding areas and water bodies. Standard landfills are extremely detrimental to the nearby ecosystem, which is why we should switch to a cleaner alternative. This cleaner alternative is a sanitary landfill. The main difference between a standard and sanitary landfill is that the waste is buried underneath a layer of soil, and a layer of local plants are planted above. In some cases, the sanitary landfill can even be lined with material to prevent seepage. In a sanitary landfill, methanogenic bacteria underneath the soil deplete the oxygen, and organically decompose all of the waste present without harming the surrounding areas. Thus, this version of a landfill preserves the surroundings, and doesn't even add a bad visual or a bad smell to a particular area. Steps need to be taken to popularize these landfills and replace standard ones with their better sanitary counterparts. I aim to strive for change in my locality and convert a standard landfill into a sanitary one to preserve my environment. I hope this information inspires you to create change ! |
