Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference for the Environment

The frightening signs of global warming are becoming too frequent and too severe to ignore. The need for individuals to find ways to become part of the solution is great. It would be a mistake to think that you can't contribute. Common activities such as recycling, reducing water waste and switching to energy-efficient light bulbs really can make a difference if enough people join the movement.

A simple way that you can do your part to slow climate change is to choose eco-friendly products from responsible companies. It's much easier than you think. Businesses all over the world are responding to consumers' demands for safe and earth-friendly products. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

In the Kitchen

Simple everyday choices can have a huge impact on healing our planet. Search out responsible companies like USANA and spread the word with the USANA refer a friend program that benefits you, your friends and the world. Give your business and your support to eco-conscious companies and boycott those that continue to take actions that are harmful to the environment.

Stop using single-use items in the kitchen. Replace paper towels with Swedish dishcloths or cotton tea towels. Use real dishes rather than paper plates. Instead of using plastic wrap, try reusable beeswax paper or fabric bowl covers. Switch from plastic baggies to washable and reusable silicone food bags.

Stop buying and using plastic containers. Switch to tempered glass or metal containers instead. A low-cost and beautiful way to store things in the fridge is to use mason jars.

Replace your kitchen chemicals with clean alternatives. You can get natural cleaners at most grocery stores these days and the number of great companies producing them is growing. Alternatively, It is surprisingly easy to make your own cleaning products using items like essential oils, white vinegar and lemon juice.

In the Bathroom

There are so many small changes you can make in this essential room. Start with a focus on reducing waste and what you add to the local landfill. Buy simple glass containers and spray bottles to hold your body products and cleaners and then purchase the big refills on as many products as you can to reduce how many containers you throw away. You can also switch to bar soap and bar shampoo and conditioner as well to cut out the containers altogether. Of course, you can also DIY these products if you have the inclination.

Cut out anything disposable in the bathroom. Use reusable razors. Stop buying disposable makeup wipes and cotton balls; you can replace them with reusable cotton versions or just forgo them altogether and simply use the same cloth you wash your face with.

Switch your toilet paper from one made of tree pulp to a bamboo product. And use less of it by installing an inexpensive bidet attachment to your existing toilet. Stop using and throwing away an endless string of plastic toothbrushes. Use bamboo brushes instead. They'll last longer and they are biodegradable.

In the BackYard

You want your yard to be beautiful, but there are a lot of ways you can make it sustainable as well. Start by switching all your lawn tools from gas to electric. Everyone knows about the danger of carbon emissions from cars, but the average lawn mower produces very high levels as well.

Plant greenery and flowers that are natural to the area you are in. They will repel insects more naturally and will need less water as they are adaptive to their natural environment. Be sure to include plenty of flowering plants to provide food for bees and butterflies.

Other ideas would be to switch to solar lighting throughout your outdoor areas and set up a simple water barrel to capture rainwater to be used in your lawn care.

If you've been thinking that there isn't much you can do to change the course of climate change, you couldn't be more wrong. There are so many small changes that individuals can make. If millions of people decided to make a few small changes, the impact could literally save the world.
