Watershed is an area of land that collects water and sends it to the nearest body of water. Each watershed has its own unique sizes and shape, but the impact they have to the environment is equally massive. The recognition of its importance and the fact that our actions are vital to preserve the watershed will save not only humans but other organisms that are living on earth. Watershed is composed of rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, and many other waters. Consequently, it affects many aspects of our lives. For instance, it provides entertainment through fishing and hiking. It also has been saving our lives as it helps to lessen the destruction of floods by absorbing or slowing water (depending on which watershed it is). Furthermore, it captures waterfall and runoff from storms, purifies them while they flow down along the watershed, and allows it to be used as drinkable water. Watershed deeply relates to the ecosystem as well. It provides homes for many fishes and other animals. It also cleans air and water. The balance between industrial activities and nature is vital for our future generation. Planning an effective watershed management not only helps it but to prevent overuse of water and excessive amounts of destruction of natural resources. However, watershed management isn't done by a single organization but by various groups such as public agencies, private landowners, non-profit organizations, and members of the community. Therefore, more attention leads to a better management of watersheds. One watershed impacts vast amount of areas and eventually the whole planet. |
