Honey Bees and UAE¡¯s Efforts for its conservation

by Rohan Kapur | 25-01-2019 03:53 recommendations 0

Hello Fellow Ambassadors, You may be aware that honey produced in the UAE is among the best in the world. In an arid and harsh environment it is challenge to sustain them in the country. Al Sidr trees from Yemen are imported into Ras Al Khaimah in order to produce this rare honey. In 2018 One thousand such trees were imported and planted in the valleys of Hadramaut. It is harvested twice a year.

The UAE imports 95 per cent of the bees to produce its honey each year, but they are not well suited to the local climate. Efforts are underway to create a Dubai breed that will fare better in the UAE¡¯s harsh climate and produce high quality honey.

Honey Bees helps in pollination of Seventy percent of fruit, vegetable and nut crop species that feed 90 per cent of the world¡¯s population. If they die, so would the plants they pollinate. And if this happens, experts say the world would lose half the vegetables and fruits that are available today. And it is fact that they are dying. Much faster than we think and imagine.

A colony of one of the UK¡¯s rarest bees has been identified thanks to the support of the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund. This Fund has been helping a rare bee species in the UK spread their wings at a time when the species is under threat from loss of habitat and the use of pesticides.

The long-horned bee, otherwise known as Eucera longicornis, was once widespread in southern England, but has suffered a serious decline in recent years due to a number of threats. In the year this fund has given a grant to conserve this breed & it has really helped a lot in order to protect the species.

When a small country like UAE can do this, why not others chip in & make efforts to revive the Honey Bee population. This effort will ensure the human survival as Albert Einstein once said that if bees were eliminated, human kind would soon perish.

Hello Rohan, though they look so small in our nature and do not seem to cover a large part of our ecosystem, they are key insects in overall nature since they are connection-making species among plants and plants with animals. Thanks to various field works and effort by UAE associations and organizations, many honey bees still do survive climate change and other relative threats!

    Hello Rohan!

Thanks for sharing information about bees and the effort to preserve the species. Bees truly are so important. Bees are also one of the nature and I think we shouldn't destroy the nature just because of our own convenience. Many people aren't aware of these state of affairs. We need to arouse their attention and start protecting the species. (not only bees but also many other living things that are suffering because of human.)

    Thank you!

Bees are one of the most important pollinator and we canot imagine a world without there presence. The honey produced by bees are used for various purpose from medicine. With the advancement of research in breeding and genetic improvement, I hope better races of honey bee that can be well adapted to the local situation can be created.I am glad to hear the actions being taken to preserve the endangered species of the bee.

Thank you for such a detailed and beautiful report of honey bee in UAE. I had also organized Apiculture Training to students of Rampur Campus and field visit to honey bee farm from Youth Innovation Network.

    Keep Writing more reports.
I am excited to read more reports from you.
Green cheers from the land of Himalayas.

    Hey Rohan

I trust you are well. I was not aware that the nation of the UAE produce one of the best honey. Moreover, I was unaware of the fact that the UAE imports such a substantial amount of trees for both honey and crop yield. I commend Mohamed for his admirable efforts in safeguarding the bee population count.

Bees are a very important piece of nature's system, and I believe that these small species need to be protected at all times.

    Thank you for reporting Rohan!
    Yours sincerely
    Rosa Domingos
