Go Veg - to save water |
---|
First of all, open confession : I am a non-vegetarian, who love to eat any good preparation of Chicken and mutton!!! But, apart from, our present food habit, I believe, we need to think of at every step on the present available resources available with us to live a sustainable life. We all know that water is one of such natural resources which is predicted to be the main cause of future "3rd World War" as per National Geographic magazine few years back. So, we all must try to do something whatever little way it may be...Changing the eating habit from non-vegetarian to vegetarian is one of such steps which we all can adopt without much effort (initially we may not like it!!!). 1) 16,000 litres of virtual water are needed to produce 1 kg of meat 2) By reducing the animal product contribution in the diet, global green water (rainwater) consumption decreases up to 21 percent while for blue water (irrigation water) the reductions would be up to 14 percent. 3) It is possible to secure adequate food supply for an additional 1.8 billion people without increasing the use of water resources by shifting to vegetarian diet. I know that changing food habit is bit difficult for many of us, but just to share my personal experience here for all of you: after decided to reduce my meat intake, within 2 years of time, I am now eating at least 60% of my main meals as vegetarian meals and to tell you the truth, I started enjoying the vegetarian foods a lot...so why you also won't try out? |

16,000 litres for 1 kg of meat? It's not a funny number at all. I should reduce meat intake for good of everyone on this planet :)

Thanks for an inspiring article especially for meat eaters. I am anyways 100% vegetarian and am proud of being so . Meat eaters can reduce meat consumption if they can't totally cut it off. Glad to know that you are turning vegetarian. Keep it up !

I'd read these statistics in a newspaper once and from the on non-vegetarian meals have become pleasure foods reserved for events. Anyway, thanks for the info, Unmesh!

I am very impressed with your confession Umesh, its what we need now. We pretend to be a person whom we are not resulting in complexities.
the amount of water used is too much and obviously can be saved to certain extent if we reduce the consumption of meat.
I deeply appreciate your initiative of going veg and will try to go veg.
