NO POACHING

by | 08-09-2014 16:46 recommendations 0

Poaching refers to the illegal killing, catching or hunting of the wild animals for various reasons. Poaching is mainly done for commercial purposes, make personal gain or get satisfaction for the illegal acts and to make traditional medicine as well in some countries. Ivorys, skins, horns, paws, eggs and so many parts are poached and traded at high cost internationally. Because of many inter-liking and networks spread over all over world it has become very difficult to enforce laws against poaching.

Nepal consist more than 5,000 species of flowering plants, 181 species of mammals, 844 species of birds, 185 species of fishes, about 635 species of butterflies and more than 2252 moths. 3 species of reptiles, 9 species of birds and 27 species of mammals are protected in Nepal. Among them Asian Wild Elephant (Elephas maximus), Royal Bengal Tiger(Panthera tigris tigris) and one Horned Rhinoceros(Rhinoceros unicornis) are found in Chitwan National Park( oldest national park which is as well listed in UNESCO World Heritage Site). These three animals are most vulnerable for poaching and among them one horned rhinoceros is more prone to poaching.

But, we have goods news for all animal lovers, environmental conservationist and those who are against poaching. Nepal has marked 2013 as no poaching year and its about to happen same in 2014 if all goes well. In fact this is not the first year Nepal has marked no poaching year. In 2011 there was no poaching at all. While to slight disappoint to conservationist and government, in 2012 one rhino was killed.

According to 2011 census, 534 rhinos are found up from 425 in 2008 and the trend is at increasing rate. Thanks to the effort of various Government officials, Police, Armies, I/NGOs like WCN, WWF, IUCN and local people, we have achieved the goal of conserving our animals.

If i have to tell my personal story, I often visit national park as its very near to my home. I used to rarely see Rhinos but nowadays every time i visit i get to see often so many rhinos some eating the grasses some resting and some taking care of calf. its so enchanting.

Lets hope we can make hat trick and then even celebrate 10 years without poaching.

Finally, let?s go all of us against poaching, avoid killing such rare animals, intensify our bio-diversity and make our earth heaven.

Thank you Rahul for featuring this topic ,poaching has become a worldwide problem as well as here Kenya. We are doing a lot of campaigns such as 'Ivory Belongs to Elephant' among others to emphasize on the value of biodiversity conservation. My take on this topic is that there should be a worldwide ban on ivory trade.Working together will help us save the elephants and rhinos.

Wow..It's the second year of such success in Nepal. In 2011 the country also had none, and in 2012 it lost just one rhino to poaching. This achievement is particularly notable in the face of increased poaching elsewhere. Nepal's success is the result of "strong and committed leadership, excellent national collaboration among enforcement entities and with parks agencies, very effective engagement with local communities, and targeted intelligence-led enforcement actions leading to arrests of key players at the top of the criminal chain."
    Many congratulations guys..Kudos!!

like Rohan and Guru Vishnu have focused , strict laws must be made. Moreover, culture which are promoting the use of such items should be discouraged by every person and we need to develop the world where poaching is taken as sin.

I can't imagine how can people simply cut out their ivory or horns and sell them without feeling guilty. It's a very unnecessary, luxurious desire that infringe with animals' right to live. It's such a shame we kill elephants or rhinos just to fulfil the need of an ivory or a horn to put on a show in our house. I want the hunter to rethink, is it that needy to kill endangered animals just for a piece of their bone. Nepal's campaign is so cool. It's the right thing to do. Animals killing and poaching happened too much in the past up until now and we need to take an immediate action to protect animals.

Poaching is menace & must be controlled. All the best to Nepal to make a hat-trick & I wish it is curbed throughout the world.
Strict laws & stricter enforcements are required.

Nepal has been able to make great effort in the current years to overcome poaching. The government is now more conscious in this regard and year 2013 was able to become year of zero poaching. It is the collective effort of of both the government and the general public.
the strict laws in the national parks and conservation areas has been implemented with the help of Army officers and people like you who are residing near the national park and are aware of the effects of Poaching.
Thank you for sharing great report

Absolutely, goverment must enforce strict rules against poaching, and awareness generation programs should as well be conducted using mass medias and SNS to reach maximum youths and people all over the world and make each of us aware about the importance of biodiversity and role of each species to maintain Ecosystem.
Poaching is an international market, so every nation should make a common law and acts to protect all the rare, endangered and vulnerable species from being killed and (most terrifying) from being extinct.

  • Arushi Madan says :
It's really pity that rhinos have to suffer poaching onslaught due to their (so called) priced horns. There should be anti-poaching laws. Most important fact we must realise is that poachers are motivated by the prospect of profit. The greater the expected profit from poaching, the greater the incentive to poach. So if all of us decide NOT to buy animal products then poachers will not see any market , any profit which will eventually stop poaching.
Glad to know that Nepal is serious about it and is going to have 2nd year in a row as "No Poaching year". Thanks for sharing the details including improvements you see there in rhinos's counts and survival rate.
We are with you and fully support your pledge " let's go all of us against poaching, avoid killing such rare animals, intensify our bio-diversity and make our earth heaven".
