Plastic water Bottles & Aluminium Cans have literally invaded our life. In practically each country of the world water is sold in plastic bottle & Carbonated Drinks in cans. Every day hundreds of tons of both the items are used all over the planet. After usage, these items find their way to dustbins & ultimately Landfills. We all know that Plastic & Cans takes hundreds of years to decompose. But what is the motivation to the public not to throw the same in trash & look for recycling options. In such a scenario, Bee'ah in Sharjah Emirate has introduced a novel way to motivate the public to recycle Plastic bottles & Aluminium cans. They have installed Reverse Vending Machines called RVMs at various places of Sharjah. Bee?ah is the Middle East?s leading and award-winning fully integrated environment and waste management company, based in Sharjah. You are required to take these recyclable stuff to the RVMs located near to your residence. I have attached some pictures of the same in my report. You have to Put the bottle or can in the machine, close the door. In few seconds the bottle or can is recycled. I found this really exciting & for the past two years I?m using these machines to recycle bottles & cans. You may look at the pictures & see the satisfaction on my face. The smile tells it all. It gives unparalleled satisfaction to contribute to the Bee?ah?s target of Zero waste to landfills by 2015. I encourage all UAE members & Ambassadors to make use of this exciting arrangement & give your own assistance in achieving The target of Zero Waste to Landfills by 2015. Thanks for reading. |

@ Anne, Thanks for your comments. It is indeed shame, not to recycle. Australia has many RVMs in various cities. You may refer to Envirobank website for details.

@ Jekk,Thanks for your comments, The machine sheds the plastic & aluminium cans & makes it ready for recycling by the recycling company. It can shed 800-1000 pieces at full capacity.
It is interesting & a great innovation.

@ Bindu, Thanks for your comments. This is commercially viable in Nepal as well. These days plastic & can is used in big numbers all over.
Both are biggest junks in Landfills too.

@ Christy, Thanks for your Comments. Yes, we get points. The machine sheds the plastic & can & makes it ready for recycling.
It is the satisfaction of recycling that is the main force here. Doing my little service to the nature & motivating others for the same.

Rohan, I am interested on that machine. Once you put the bottle or the can inside the machine, what will happen? Maybe a little bit confused on that part. But I believe that is a great innovation. Many will be curious and use it a again as a way of living :)

Thank you for the cool introduction, Rohan :)
If I put a used plastic bottle into the vending machine, what will I get back from it?
Cash back? or point?

I wish such technology gets initiated in my country too :) Plastic bottles and aluminum cans has become one of the chief pollutant these days especially in city areas.
