Celebrating World's Toilet Day

by | 20-11-2014 04:57 recommendations 0

Today Kenya joined in celebrating The world¡¯s toilet day. Like many other developing countries across the world, Kenya population is undergoing rapid urbanization with majority of the poor living in urban informal settlements where people struggle to get access to basic sanitation facilities like toilets due to lack of enough space. The slum dwellers are often forced to use flying toilets when it gets dark, defecate in open or pay to use community latrines that are not in good condition¡¦often cleaned due to water shortage among other challenges thus risk of waterborne infections such as diarrhea as a result of untreated human waste.

Waste management is therefore a key challenge with 8 million people in Kenya¡¯s slum alone generating 4 million tons of fecal sludge annually .None of this is properly collected and treated.

Working as a Sanergy fellow, I have had a great deal of exposure to sanitation business value chain .Sanergy works with a vibrant urban informal settlement called Mukuru located in one of the Nairobi Informal settlements .Their ¡°Fresh life toilet¡± is designed for people living in the slum, because it has special features that helps make it easy to clean, sanitary and remove the waste from. The Freshlife toilets have replaced the ¡°flying toilets¡± at Mukuru because they are run by local entrepreneurs who become franchise partner.  The franchisees charge for usage of the toilets, and can make up to $40 a week by running two toilets. Sanergy¡¯s trained and properly equipped freshlife frontline collect the waste everyday from the facility and takes it to a processing plant for conversion of useful by-products such as organic fertilizer and energy biogas source.

Freshlife toilets are part of the environmental solutions because they have minimized ¡°flying toilets ¡°again they do not use water instead small sawdust is used as a cover material after a long call .The toilet is a business to the local resident at the same time solution to environmental problems .How cool is that¡¦

Never knew there was such thing as ' toilet day' . This is very interesting but at the same time understandable with the increasing popluation of a developing country like Kenya where bad hygiene leads to infections and diseases . Spreading toilets like this and making them available for all kinds of people helps maintain a clean environment :))

It is quite devastating that 4 million tonnes of fecal sludge is produced in Kenya without prpoer collection and treatment. This is really hazardous to the environment and human health. But I'm really impressed with the fresh life initiative. I'm sure it will go a lon g way in helping the situation. Thanks for sharing.

Recently, there had been a report that more people have cellular phones than access to sanitary toilets in the Philippines. I hope we can turn this data around since the overall health of the people rely on their hygiene. I wish people will all be responsible in waste management and give more importance to their health. Thanks for sharing this! :)

Quite an informative piece Samuel. Indeed the 'Fresh life toilet' has greatly improved the sanitation condition at Mukuru slums. It would be great to see the project spread to other Informal settlement areas in Nairobi like Kibera slum, where environmental and sanitation conditions are poor. Keep up the good job!

Thanks , Samuel , for introducing "Fresh life Toilets" to us . These are indeed cool. Basic sanitation and clean toilets availability should be given top priority by local municipalities else health of residents , hygiene and environment of state is at stake.

Well reported, Samuel. Its a win-win situation for both. The locals earn from it, Environment is taken care of & 'Flying Toilet' is avoided.
You know worldwide, people have more mobile phones then access to toilets.

Pleasant toilet is treated as being granted in many developed countries but still for developing countries, improving sanitation is critical public health issue. I feel so proud of you for being front line to improve your community, Samuel!

Nice report samuel. I love this article it really focuses on solid waste management. This should be focused and planned by the government, each community, to adapt in the increasing population of Kenya and urbanization in your place. Is there such a fee in using the toilet? Just a question. :) Thank u Samuel!
