Two young Malaysian Tunza Eco-Generation ambassadors, Ms Wen Shin Chia and Mr. Chuck Chuan Ng joined the armed force of the ASEAN Young Professionals Volunteer Corps (AYPVC) program between 23 November and 6 December 2014 in Viet Nam. The program took place at Hai Duong Commune, Thua Thien Hue Province of Viet Nam which was designed to provide environmental awareness and sustainable livelihood practices to the local communities.
The AYPVC program is a regional volunteering program initiated and supported by the Brunei Darussalam government together with the participation of 24 Samaritans from all ten ASEAN countries.
The overall program consists of three main parts of volunteering program that include of:
(1) Education workshop sessions for both kindergarten children and primary pupils
(2) Environmental workshop (solutions) sessions for the local community and
(3) Aiding in fence construction for the kindergarten school.
The grouping of the volunteering tasks were carefully arranged and divided based on the needs of the serving community at Hai Duong Commune, Hue Province, Viet Nam. All of the activities require different set of skills and within the project duration of two-week, all of us managed to complete the tasks in building the fence for the kindergarten school, conducted several workshops for kindergarten children and both primary schools as well as providing feasible solutions to the local communities in minimizing the existing environmental impacts within their residential areas.
Some of the highlight activities (workshops) that we have conducted for the Hai Duong communities throughout the program:-
(i) Education sessions for kindergarten children (Hands and dental hygiene, fundamental life skills and eco-games)
(ii) Education sessions for primary school pupils (Fundamental English skills, team building and environmental awareness games) (iii) Environmental sessions for the local communities (Massive clean-up campaign in the coastal area, environmental training and awareness activities for the local youth organizations)
There were numerous invaluable experiences that we have gained throughout the 2-week program in Hue province, Viet Nam. We have met many people from various backgrounds and understand their wonderful culture across nations. Indeed, we have further built a strong connection and bonding between the delegates from all of the ten ASEAN countries and local community members.
Together we served above self – by Wen Shin CHIA and Chuck Chuan NG
