Urbanization is so great in today's modern era to encourage people to switch to urban life, both physically in the form of shelter, or in social life. Mindset that life in the city will bring higher welfare may be one important factor high current urbanization. A fact that is evident in the city today is the increase in the density of the city, increasing the need jobs, and an increased need for shelter. Factors residence (hometown) is then often have a negative impact on the physical aspects of the area where dense settlements tend to be a polluted environment, unhealthy, prone to fires, floods, and so on. Therefore, various efforts have been exercised by the government to solve the problems of this city village, one of which is relocating residents to establish vertical housing.

Whether we realize it or not, this is actually the concept of vertical housing also had a positive impact on microclimate in an urban area. The current issue of global warming is exacerbated by the lack of green open space (RTH) in the urban environment so that the city becomes very high temperature or known as the urban heat island. Another due to lack of green space is the high levels of pollution in the region because of the absence of vegetation-vegetation as absorbent media pollutants, such as CO2. So what to do with the concept of vertical housing? Of course there will be more vertical housing forming open spaces that can be developed into a green open space.

However, the realization of concept of vertical housing is currently experiencing a clash against the social aspect, especially for residents of settlements. Transition to vertical housing for the citizens of the village is a big change for them. Not only human beings who move, but also life in the family or society. There are many things that people need to be maintained as the local culture (locality), social values, and different perceptions that should be accommodated vertical housing as a new living space for them. This is where the real importance of the government or party planners in shaping the concept of vertical housing humanist that tall building is not just a mere physical development, but also at least be able to maintain the social patterns of citizens who have awakened long ago. Therefore vertkal residential development must involve the citizens starting from initial concept or idea, until the construction process, and the vertical housing is also different concepts and forms in each locality where to adjust the different communities as well. Therefore, it may not just their house are formed vertically, but the "village" it is also established that there is a term vertical vertical village, which has a wider meaning than just shelter.

The concept of vertical village development actually not new anymore, in Singapore for example. Singapore Housing Agency (Housing and Development Board) launched a vertical village project as an integrated complex that is scheduled to be completed in 2017. The plan of this complex will provide housing for 80 percent of the population of Singapore. HDB project is a collaboration with the Ministry of Health aims to provide the village contained a variety of services such as shops, hawker centers, health facilities, and daycare in the same building.

Proximity Society as one characteristic of the village is maintained even in the form of a vertical village. In the village, the houses of citizens made by each other and there are facilities that allow citizens to share, mingle, and bound. These facilities such as child care centers, parent centers, nursing homes, open space on the ground floor for celebrations and festivals, gardens and parks in the roof for gardening activities together, and banquet facilities for various events together. Thus the concept of the village has little to do with the physical aspect but rather the spirit of togetherness. In addition, the existing space programs can still foster a sense of intimacy and a sense of living in the village in a tall building.

Vertical village development in Singapore is not to be emulated in Indonesia because it clearly has a culture in a society that is very different from ours. However, the concept of vertical village that can inspire us to build a vertical village not only in the form of high buildings, but also other facilities and services vertically retains the existing village life over the years.

However the condition of the global climate is increasingly worrying and we do not have the power to control it. All we can do is adjust the existing natural conditions by developing environmentally friendly, which adds to the green open space, which does not cause population density, which is secure against flooding, although it may be paid with a mindset change lives horizontally into vertically. The development process can no longer simply rely on a solution for a moment, but long-term solutions. We are thinking how to Indonesia in 2030, 2050, or even 2100. Therefore the general public -particularly urban settlements should be given an understanding of the direction of this development, though gradually because obviously not easy to deal with people with a lot of social forces that are so high.

Hello! Indeed, this is a really good way to maximize the spaces and accommodate the intensely growing populations. More importantly, it can decrease the rate of urban sprawling that pushes agricultural expansions to the forests. The only thing that this style has to majorly consider is its resiliency to various shocks to the environment (eg. floods, earthquakes). :)

Vertical village concept sounds great especially in those areas with high population density and limited area of expansion. But as Rohan, Bindu di and Arushi have stated, sutainability issues should not be escaped.
Vertical village seems to minimize the human encroachment to forest and agriculture land (as the expansion is vertical rather then horizontall). Every concept and action has its pros and cons and I loved the concept of Vertical village.
Thanks for sharing the report Ulfiana

Vertical village is a sustainable way of village style living, getting the joy of village living without occupying as much land resources as traditional villages do. But it has it's own disadvantage too especially the risk factor when floods or earthquake occur.

@Rohan Kapur- I totally agree with your feedback. Yeah there are several merits and demerits associated with vertical housing. The governmental policies and as you mentioned the mind set of the people, their culture may not favor this concept. How about the possible disasters that will take more severe form in vertical housing. Thus, sustainability is a major factor to be considered, carrying capacity should be analyzed before implementing such concept in Indonesia. With well planning success can be achieved through win- win situation.

Vertical Housing is great but it must be done in a controlled manner. Due diligence must be carried out. The soil must be capable of carrying the load.
Municipal approvals are also must. They must not be ignored.
Overall, sustainability must be thought of before planning such an expansion.
