TRACE ELEMENTS IN AGROSYSTEMS AND ITS IMPACTS ON THE ENVIRONMENT

by | 21-02-2015 23:38 recommendations 0

Trace elements means elements at low concentration and common examples of trace elements are including copper, zinc, manganese, iron, boron  and other which have hazardous  on human health. These elements are essential for pant growth and are called micro nutrients. These elements are also heavy metals and are toxic to plants at high concentrations.

Trace elements in an agro ecosystem are either inherited from soil parent materials or inputs through human activities. soil contamination with heavy metals  and toxic  elements due to parent materials is common nowadays. Repeated use of metal –enriched chemicals, fertilizes ,organic amendments such as sewage sludge as well as wastewater may cause contamination at a large scale..a good example is the  increase concentration of Cu and Zn in soils under long-term production of citrus and other fruit crops.

Trace elements enter an agro ecosystem through both natural and anthropogenic processes. Soil inherits trace elements from its parent materials. Some soils have been found to have high background of some trace elements toxic to plants and wildlife. Androgenic processes include inputs of trace elements through use of fertilizers, organic manures, and industrial and municipal waste, irrigation .These processes contribute to variable amounts of trace elements to the agro ecosystem.

Accumulation of trace elements, especially heavy metals, in the soil has potential to restrict the soil s function, cause toxicity  to plants ,and contaminate the food chain. In recent years, it has also been found that heavy metals from point and nonpoint sources impair water systems, causing lesions and/or deformation in fish.

Today, in most urban area  or agricultural land with long history of crop production, the concentration  of trace elements in soils

Increased anthropogenic   inputs of heavy metals in soils have received considerable attention ,since transport of the metals may result in an increased content of heavy metals in the ground water or surface water.

My concern is that trace elements are leading to food poisoning and subsequent many deaths in both rural and especially urban centers due to ignorance.

It is a serious issue that industrialization has brought. Human interventions have damaged the eco-systems to the core.
Once trace elements get into the soil it takes many years for soil to regenerate.
    Well reported AZIEH.

Indeed, many of the trace elements are dangerous for they are highly toxic even in just small amounts. Most of these are actually introduced by human activities such as various agricultural practices. I would also like to share that here in the Philippines, we have discovered certain plants that can phytoremediate contaminated soils. Perhaps this technology can be shared to other countries facing problems on increasing soil contamination with trace elements.

I consider food as the most delicate area to be viewed with extra eye because thats what make our day. It has been so nice to see you speaking about that. So nice article for sure.
