Rainfall Enhancement in the UAE

by | 13-05-2015 19:37 recommendations 0

One of the driest places on Earth, receiving only a handful of rain in an year & where the existing groundwater resources are predicted to last just 15 years is our UAE.

To augment rainfall, cloud seeding has traditionally been used since past 50 years but this is an old technology. With new advancements in offing the Ministry of Presidential Affairs of the UAE has launched an ambitious competition to identify, study & encourage upto 5 projects by reserachers which may result in increased rainfall. This has a prize money of US$5 Million.

UAE is making rapid strides in the era of technology & infrastructure but it keeps a constant eye on the Environment & sustainability. It is the pioneeer in many energy saving ideas. In the context increasing the rainfall will increase agriculture production & groundwater resources.

The encouraging part of this competition is that 325 scientists and researcheres attached with 151 organisations have applied to participate. Friends, remember that this will help not only the UAE but the benefits shall be shared by all the world. The water security problem may be solved & yet again UAE will emerge as a leader in this field also. Out of this large number of participants UAE research programme for rainfall enhancement has taken 78 pre proposals.

The results will be announced on 01-Jun-2015 & sucessful candidates will be required to submit full proposals & will get a total grant of US$5 Million over a three year period.

Keep the fingers crossed & hope for the best.

Thanks for reading..

And if these ideas are implemented properly ,surely UAE as well as rest of the world shares its benefits as u mentioned as new technology can be implemented on our country too..

I've received beautiful sand of 7 colors from each state in UAE from our lovely UAE ambassadors :) It's beautiful, and it means that UAE is one of the most driest places in the world. I do cherish the comprehensive effort to turn the land into green land done by the government of UAE and its people. It's betting another great shot! I look forward to see awesome solutions in June!

@ Alina, Arushi, Bindu & Shafira, thanks for your warm comments.

I'll keep you posted at this platform, Bindu.

That's the vicious circle Shafira. As such all the landscaping in UAE is watered with recycled sewerage water only. They do not use fresh water at all.

    I hope this works too...

But what if they plant more? wouldn't that increase evaporation / transpiration of which may lead to more rainfall. but then again, the plant will need to be watered constantly due to the drought. :/

    But good luck

I have heard about the water issues in UAE being one of the driest place in Earth. The competition seems so innovative. I wish the best technique be granted US $ 5 million and way forward to increase the rainfall. On success it would be a huge achievement not only to UAE but to the whole existing biotic community.
I would love to hear the results. Please keep updating dear Raunak :)

Annual rainfall is less than 100 millimetres a year in UAE so there is a very urgent need for more rain. Competitions like these would definitely bring up good research projects ultimately leading to increase in precipitation & boost in rainfall. Thanks for sharing , Raunak.
