Sharing Smiles and Spreading the Strength

by | 03-06-2015 17:36 recommendations 0

On May 10th it was my birthday.  So, I planned to conduct Child Friendly campaign for children in earthquake affected area to relieve post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a way to share happiness on my birth date. Unfortunately, as the schools were all closed due to earthquake I couldn't do so in the very day.  So, as a celebration on 10th May I planted one tree at my home remarking my green birthday. Of course, everyday is humanitarian day for me and I don't need to check calendar for some special date to extend my helping hands. Finally on 25th May, Computer and printer handover program for a school was set jointly by Rotary Club and Rotaract club of Narayangarh, Nepal. I proposed the president of Rotaract club where I am involved as Professional Service Director to conduct child friendly campaign and collaborate with Tunza Eco- generation too. He was glad to hear and approved my proposal.

So in the early morning of 25th May, I along with Rotaractor friends and Rotarian seniors headed towards Khetbari, Dahakhani VDC, Chitwan Nepal. Khetbari is an obscure village where one can feel the paradise untouched with modernization. Chiefly, people belonging to Chepang caste (disadvantaged group) reside in that village. Classes had already started by the time we reached there we could see those eager eyes of students staring at us through windows.  Formal session started for donating computer and printer for school. Then after, we guided students towards one big classroom for next session. Though the room was a bit congested for nearly 100 students, we had no alternatives as it was scorching hot outside.

I had collected some animated videos of earthquake, as I believe children will learn with fun through audio visual media. Before displaying the videos, I instructed them to listen carefully as we had chocolates to those who can answer to our questions. The session was very interactive, even some parents participated. I gave information about the types of waves in earthquake, preparedness for earthquake, safety measures to be adopted at different places during earthquake, its measurement and strength etc. Afterwards, we distributed soaps and chocolates to each of them. I distributed pens sent by Tunza - Eco generation to students of grade 5 with a brief introduction about TUNZA. We donated dustbins in each class and suggested students for proper use of dustbin and waste management in school. I was so delighted to see even small kids were throwing chocolate wrappers in dustbins. I would like to thank Rotaract president and members who helped me conduct the sessions.

I would like to thank Upakar Bhandari brother for donating some amount to buy dustbins for this event. Massive earthquake has caused a severe trauma to people especially children, I believe within three hours of the session my effort for sharing happiness and spreading the strength was successful and had some positive impact in those young minds along with some environmental education. The cheerful faces waving us goodbye made us realize their silent way of thanksgiving.

Dear Raunak, Thank you for your kind wishes. I am so glad you noticed DUSTBIN written in that big tin can. Actually it was oil tank and we have reused it as a dustbin as it is within budget too. I am happy to share that even little kids threw the chocolate wrapper in that dustbin.
    Thank you :)

    Happy Belated Birthday, Bindu.
I like the 'Dust Bin' shown in your pic [using an empty & big tin can]. This is very practical & innovative. Children can relate to is easily & use for disposal.
Hope to see the plant that you sowed turn into a strong Tree.
