World?s first fully solar-powered airport inaugurated in India |

This report is about an airport in my homeland – The Cochin International Airport.
The Cochin International Airport has become the world?s first airport to generate all the power it needs from solar technology. Bosch Limited was the implementation partner that helped the airport set up a 12 megawatt solar station in the premises. It took just six months to install 46,000 solar panels across 45 acres of land, to achieve a 12MW plant The unit will produce 50,000 units (kWh) of power per day. The airport claims that the power it generates each year would be enough for 10,000 homes. In combination with the pre-existing solar plants, the plant is expected to make the airport completely carbon neutral. Constructed on a land of 50 acres, this is the single largest solar project which has been constructed in an airport in India. Electricity generated from the solar plant was used to power airport facilities during the day and additional power was fed into the state grid. At night, the airport would draw power from the grid. |
