|BRAZIL| Acid rain

As I heard, when my mom was young, people take the rain to drink or wash clothes outside of home. People were able to drink rain water as not going though the purification process. However, these days, it is impossible to drink rain water directly and even it is harmful for soil or animals.

People are familiar with "Acid rain", which react air and water with certain chemical such as sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides to form mild acidic compounds. This rain has a number of negative impacts on ecology, human health, soils and forests.

Acid rain enables water to absorb aluminum, which result in toxic water leading to effect on many kinds of aquatic species. Even though some species can endure toxic water, they have harmful impacts on food chain in the end. Thus, non aquatic species like birds could be harmed.

The acid rain also influences the plants and trees on which it is difficult to endure cold temperature, insects and disease or less produce. Furthermore, it will reduce the nutrients of soil or destroy protective surface leaves.

How can we reduce the acid rain then?

To reduce air pollution could be the effective solution, which is possible by reducing fossil fuel and stopping pollutants.

Using low-sulphur coal burning coal is the one of the way to reduce air pollution. Also, catalytic converters in order to removing chemicals from exhaust will be the option for cars.

The acid rain becomes a huge becomes a well-known problem in Brazil as well. I hope there are many alternatives to solve the problem related to acid rain.

Apart from causing acidification of lakes and streams and contributing to the damage of trees, decay of building materials , paints, corrosion of metals , Acid rain also is harmful to human health as prior to falling to the earth, sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) gases and their particulate matter derivatives(sulfates and nitrates)contribute to visibility degradation and harm public health.Automobiles are the main source of nitrogen oxide emissions, and utility factories are the main source for sulfur dioxide emissions. So their emission standards should be set , monitored and controlled. Of course , at our individual level too we need to reduce the use of cars etc which use energy derived from fossil fuels , reduce/stop using chemically made sprays /pesticides etc , start using energy efficient appliances and do everything possible to reduce (carbon)emission. Thanks for an informative report , Luiz.

Interesting to note less acid rainfall in Africa region, embracing new technologies in clean energy will help Africa avoid effects of acidic rainfall in the future. Thanks for Sharing

yea..acid rain is very hazardous to all of the surviving species in the earth ans also reduce the beauty by detoriating the paints and wall of the temples and other scluptures..since it is caused by the cumulative effect of many individuals ,we can contribute directly in reducing acid raina by changing our habits..well we need to use energy effecient appliances,..we should prefer walking to riding vehicles, and also keep the habit of turning off the lights and fans... :)
