Malmö, the city of tomorrow

Last Month I introduced Stockholm, the capital of Sweden.  For October, I would like to present Malmö, the 3rd largest city in Sweden. Malmö is located at the southern Sweden. Also referred as sustainable city, Was selected as the best city to live in by UNEP IN 2007. Malmö was able to find the solution to city's economic threat from Green industries such as Recycling and Wind power station, and thus they were able to transform from devastated land to the one of the best place to live in.

Malmö was a famous harbor city Its main economic source was the shipbuilding industry and fishing. However, by 1990s, their main industry has collapsed due to ocean pollution and newly formed stronger shipbuilding industry nations. (Tears of Malmö) Ilmar Reepalu, the 17th chairperson of Malmö, came up with the innovative solution City of tomorrow.

The main point of this project was the transformation from industrial city to Green city. The city decided to use 100% ?renewable energy.? The renewable energy, including the solar heat, Bio-energy, Wind force, hydraulic power, terrestrial heat, Waste energy, and hydrogen energy, is known as a solution to drained fossil energy and to the environmental problems. It was widely known after the recent trends such as the Climate Change policies. By using these renewable energies, Malmö succeeded in constructing the eco-friendly city.

For instance, Malmö?s notable buildings are designed in environmental-friendly way. Bo, (which means ?to live?) the residential town, was planned with goal of using 100% Renewable energy. Bo has a motto of emphasizing importance on living things. Thus, starting with Bo01, the residents were planned in a way that animals can easily visit the marshlands. By looking at Bo, anyone can easily notice how Malmö interacts with nature, with its focus on environment first. The Turning Torso, the highest building in Sweden, is also designed in eco-friendly way. The turning Torso is twisted exactly 90 degrees up to 54th floor. With wind turbines nearby in less than 1 km, the tower uses solar and terrestrial energy for the heating and air conditioning.

With the City of Tomorrow project, Malmö started building environmental friendly residences, recycled resources, and improved transportation system. With hard effort, Malmö now recycles about 98% of its wastes. Malmö?s half of transportation is replaced by bicycles. Other transportations also aim to use the bio gas as their fuels. Using the geological advantages of costal wind, Malmö built 48 Wind turbines that serve over 60,000 families. The green industries also lead to high employment. With city population of 300,000, Malmö increased its employment up to 50,000 improving the impression of the city while helping nearby cities economy.
