My speech on energy savings at my Little Flower School, India

by | 18-08-2012 02:18 recommendations 0

On 6th. August 2012, I had tried to put my request to our 2000 nos. school students to avoid misuse of Electrical energy. I had delivered the below speech in presence of  our Principal Hilda D?Souza.

Good morning dear sisters, teachers, seniors brothers and sisters and my friends,

I am Rajashree from Class V ??.

I am proud to tell you that , I am doing  a project  on  ?Energy Saving?  in  our  School.  In this connection I need your support.

But Why should we need to save energy ? Is it just to save the monthly electricity bill? No.  Listen carefully to what I have to say:

Most of you know that the electricity used  in Jamshedpur,  is  the thermal energy.  Coal is used  to steam water.  With the help of the  steam, the steam turbines run/ to produce electrical energy. To produce one unit i.e. 1 kilowatt of electric energy, 0.36 Kg of coal is required.  In  Jamshedpur the rate of coal is Rs. 12 per Kg.

So Rs 4 is required to produce one unit of electricity and if we take into account  other  charges involved, the production charge/  per unit of  electricity/ comes up to  minimum Rs. 7.  But since  it is coming under essential item, our Government  is supplying it  to us in subsidized rate of  Rs. 2.88 per unit.  So by consuming per unit of electricity, we are creating a  loss Rs. 4 to our nation.

Again, burning 1 Kg coal , generates 1.83 Kg. of  Carbon dioxide.  It means that, for producing 1 unit of electricity,  650 gr. Co2 is produced. This  is called the Green house Gas. These green house gases are responsible for change in atmosphere or  Global warming.

Hence our use of 1unit of electricity not only cause our  nation a loss of Rs. 4 but it also  produces 650 gr Green House Gas which in turn leads to thinning of Ozone layer

So  consumption of electricity is to be controlled.  Misuse of electricity needs to be stopped.

Now I would like to request  all of  you to  extend  your support  to me in my endeavor to contribute in my own small way in reducing/ generation of green house gases/ by reducing electricity  consumption in our school and also in our homes.

My sincere request to you is:

1.     Before switching on lights during the day, please ensure that all the windows in the room are open and curtains are pulled to the side to allow maximum natural light/ to enter the room.

2.     Switch on the fan when it is absolutely required especially during  rainy days.

3.     Switch on the AC only if it is not manageable by ceiling fans. Let us try to use the AC only during  summer.

4.     A.C should be switched off/ at least fifteen minutes before/ leaving the room.

5.     Please keep the doors and windows tightly closed/ when AC is in on.  Ensure Auto closing system is available when you install an AC so that it switches off automatically  when the room is sufficiently cool.

6.     All water coolers need to be switched off/  an  hour before the school gets over.

7.     During  recess and while moving out of the class for PT and Library, the class rep must  ensure to  switch off / all lights and fans in the class and not wait/ for the last student to leave the class/ to do it.

8.   There are altogether 20 ACs in our school and they are  consuming the maximum power.  If one AC runs for an  hour,/  it will consume  1.5 Unit electricity and 1.5 x 1.83 Kg of Co2  ie. 2.8 KG Co2.

9.   Similarly  running of one water cooler for an  hour consumes 1 unit i.e again 1.83 Co2.  We have  six water coolers in our school.  By switching them off in time, we can control  CO2 generation.

10. There are 23 Exhaust fans in different class rooms and  labs and they consume more power . If we open the windows/  we need not use them.

11.                        My request to our principal and our teachers too is to  switch off  the lights and the fans before they leave the place.  The  installation of a combined switch to switch off all the lights and fans in  the school will help in controlling the waste of electricity.

12.                        I have taken stock of the existing  electrical appliances in our school and to upgrade them  we need around 6 lakhs/which in turn can reduce/ the  consumption of electricity  by 30%.  Which in turn will reduce emission Green House gasses by 30%.

13.                        For this purpose I  need one Green coordinator from each class (not each section) to support me. The 12 green pillars/ can then help/  to drive the green initiative.

14.                        If you have any other suggestion to save electricity consumption in our school or in our houses/ please put it in the Suggestion Box available in the Lobby and  an effective suggestion will be awarded with  a gift.

15.                        In case you notice any misuse of electricity by any one / any class, you can bring it to the notice of your class teacher. We need to work as a team to save energy.

I would like to convey my  thanks to my principal Sister Hilda D?Souza,  for allowing me  to do this project in school and extending the necessary support.  Thank you dear teachers and friends for listening to me patiently.
