Could it be that the more we construct buildings, the more prone we become to flooding? Top Philippine geologists of the "Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) and University of the Philippines (UP) agreed that too much construction of buildings in an area sinks the land mass over which Metro Manila lies."
This is called ?ground subsidence? or the "downward displacement of surface". This can happen naturally when earthquake happens or when there is too much building. Then as subsidence occurs, more flooding happens. The UP Professor Siringan said that some areas in Malabon (going north from Makati) are "sinking by 10 centimeters a year while others descends by as much as one meter in four years". It does not help that the sea level is rising because of global warming. |
