The 12th international equipment Water and Environment Exhibition  (Siee-Pollutec) held from February 1 to 4 current, was for several national operators an opportunity to ask to be put to the test face foreign competition in some projects.

During the four-day event, a number of exhibitors, specialized in the water sector, renewable energy or the recovery of waste, highlighted their expertise.

"We do not want funding from the state, we hope that mentalities are changing and that we believe in our skills," said APS project director of a company specializing in recycling and the installation of photovoltaic panels, Ahmed Hadef.

In Algeria, he added, "the universities train the skills we need and it is direct them to companies specializing in the field of the environment."

According to him, the Algerian companies specializing in waste management have evolved over recent years.

Another head of a specialized electronics company, Abdelmoumène Benmesbah, which has developed an electronic system of sewage management evokes constraints.

"Our system is 100% Algerian. It includes an electronic control card and software designed by our engineers. It is much cheaper than imported system and has been tested successfully. Unfortunately, we are unable to find customers. Nobody seems to believe that Algeria a company able to develop this type of system, "he laments.

Even finding pointed to the boss of a company specialized in the construction of water treatment plants, Mohamed Ouahabi, indicating that domestic private enterprises operating in this area are very difficult to snatch market.

"It is easier to get market by coming with a foreign partner even if it is only there to provide some equipment," he relates.

In reality, if some Algerian companies have gained a lot of experience and know-how, the problem is the picture are some of their skills.

Other operators drew attention to the absence of links between universities and companies specialized in the environment sector.

The industry in which we operate requires specialised with different profiles, including electricians, engineers, hydraulics, civil engineering, biologists and others. Yet, many of these graduates are unaware that there are companies specializing in the environment in Algeria and that they may need their expertise.

It is nice to see the Algerian educational institutes such as universities are taking an initiative to build up their young generation as capable leaders of environmental protection. Utilizing these skills for developing and implementing effective water and waste management programs will benefit the community as well as the environment in numerous ways.
