Hari Air Sedunia 2016 (World Water Day)

by Dewi Retno S | 09-04-2016 20:49 recommendations 0

Just like the previous year, my organization in university held another 'Hari Air Sedunia' to celebrate World Water Day. This year, the events include 'susur sungai', photography and poster contest, and discussion. The events held in several days, take place in my university and mangrove conservation in Wonorejo, Surabaya.

Susur sungai is an event where we get into a boat and trace along a river and collect trash. This event also gives a vision about the current situation about the river. In Wonorejo, the river is already contaminated. The main waste which causes pollution suspected from domestic waste water. In meeting point where this event held, there is a pumping house. It is really sad to see much foam in the river.

After it, discussion was held with the local people who have 'tambak' (fishpond) and Mr. Andreas from Ecoton. Mr. Andreas pointed out about the importance of river as mother of the sea. If the river was polluted, then the possibility of sea to be contaminated increased. In Brantas River, which is upper course of river in Surabaya, about 77 fish species were not found again (either the population were decreased or about to extinction. Not only is that, about 85% of fish female because of chemical compound like estrogen. This was also led the fish into extinction.

As a solution, Mr. Andreas gave an example from people from Sidoarjo who sacrifices about 2 ha of their land in order to make water circulation for their fishpond. The water circulation will make the water that go into the fishpond in better quality.

This year theme for World Water Day is water and jobs. From the discussion, we can see that water can affect other people life. So protection of water from pollution is needed and has to implement in all over the world.

Good job Dewi :) Your report was interesting. I am glad you spent time with your community in celebrating World Water Day. Although water resources may seem abundant at this point, the portion of safe water available for usage is declining by the day due to unsustainable usage. Thus it is important to engage the community and create awareness to reduce water reduction.

Hi Dewi. Talking about fish, I remember who the municipal city of Geneva maintained the number of fish in the lake by selling permission for fishing. Only few people can afford to buy the permissions and even they have to abide by the number of fish they can have per month. This was strictly observed and the ecology can exist as it is. Thanks for posting interesting news! hope all the best for you

Water is the most crucial and essential abiotic component of our ecosystem. It must be preserved and water sources must be kept clean. Water pollution in sources like river, ponds etc deteriorates the water quality, increases it's BOD, risking the aquatic life(mainly fish mortality). It's nice to know how 'Hari Air Sedunia 2016' (World Water Day) was celebrated at your place. Thanks for the great report.
