3RD ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION WORKSHOP

by | 24-07-2016 00:00 recommendations 0

IDEAS for University of Cape Coast, on the 1st of April, 2016, was at IMAM KHOMEINI primary to educate the pupils on the importance of environmental sanitation as part of our environmental sanitation workshop. And since we had a workshop for the Junior high school, we deemed it appropriate to do same for the primary school.

We were warmly received by the headmaster and staff, who helped in organizing the pupils. The pupils were divided into two groups (ie, lower primary and upper primary), since one classroom could not contain both the lower primary and the upper primary.

Earlier this year, I reported on the 1st and 2nd environmental workshop which was established by 15th Tunza Ambassador to Africa, Joshua Amponsem (also National Coordinator of IDEAS for Ghana), and led by Isaac Abugri who is the Campus President for IDEAS for University of Cape Coast.  For our 3rd environmental sanitation workshop, the team comprised of four members (Emmanuel Marfo, Charles Obiri and Daystar Babanawo).

Since the workshop was based on environmental sanitation and health with emphasis on personal hygiene and littering, our speakers, after explaining to the pupils what environment is, went on to talk about the reason behind the workshop (ie, environmental sanitation), stating that unhygienic conditions cause diseases, diseases such as diarrhoea, cholera, typhoid, malaria and worm infections, which are mostly acquired by children. We explained further that these diseases can be prevented when our environment is kept clean.
We touched on littering, stating that littering causes gutters to be choked leading to floods, and that one should always dispose of waste properly. We also stated that littered environments destroy other organisms that are useful and important to us.

On personal hygiene, we stated the following as practices that promote personal hygiene bathing at least twice a day, brushing our teeth at least twice a day, washing our hands with soap and running water frequently, washing our clothes, trimming our fingernails and keeping our hair neat.

Following that, we submitted a letter to our 4th school which we visited on the 8th of April. I will upload that report as soon as possible.

We also have to promote waste separation since it also helps recycle to be less costly. Organic waste must be separated from inorganic waste and also washing our hands with soap and running water is good but using running warm water is the best.
I would suggest you also tell us some of the ideas the students brought on board or the questions they asked.
    Thank you

Dear Joshua, I am so delighted to see you efforts for educating emerging youths. The kids look so cute in the pictures. Growing up with healthy attitudes will surely make these kids eco- warriors for future. And yes, absolutely right that sanitation refers to both person and environmental aspects.
    Thank you for sharing :)

Zainab, your thoughts are right. My follow up approach is frequent communication with staff of the school while giving out gifts to kids who are practicing greener lifestyle.

Hi Joshua, Im a new member here! I really enjoyed reading this article on your effort to improve personal hygiene. Im very keen to know how schools in Ghana respond to such workshops. I volunteered at a health campaign last year but I learned that without follow-ups, kids usually forget these habits. Do you have a secondary course of action planned after the workshop? Really admire your effort!!

Joshua, I remember reading your reports about previous sanitation workshops. Great job on continuing this meaningful events. As Arushi have mentioned, sanitation should be done in both personal and environmental aspects in this regard, I believe your actions gain so much meaning to our community. Thanks for sharing and have a great day!

Personal and environmental sanitation, both are equally important to keep diseases/epidemics at bay. You are really doing a good job by spreading awareness about their importance. Thanks for sharing.
