Senegal goes green
As one of the West African countries, full of history (Goré Island), Senegal is thriving in other to survive. Despite their various challenges, they keep on working toward development and the results are clear now.
With their partner Green Wish, an agency specialized in renewable energy in Sub Saharan African Senegal inaugurated the first ever solar plan in West Africa in Bohkol, in the northern part of Senegal.
This plant named Senergy 2 would generate 20 megawatt of energy to 160000 persons. Reason why, it is the largest plant in West Africa and sub Saharan Africa except South Africa.
?Without energy, there is no development, growth that?s why we decided to set a program of mix energy to reinforce the Senelec production capacity. With the the Bohkol plant, we are moving toward green energy in Senegal therefore fighting against Green House Gaz emission? declared Macky Sall during the official ceremony
It is an important step for a nation which is actively working for the inclusion of renewables in the energy mix. Currently Senegal meets most of its energy needs by using imported fossil fuels. According to the ECOWREX data portal, the electrification rate in 2016 is 90% for urban areas whereas it is 30% for rural areas. With this grid-connected solar plant, the member state makes a movement to become an example for renewable energy development in West Africa, a region that still lags behind in its development and use of the technology.

A large percentage of our greenhouse gas emission can be attributed to power generation. Hence, this fact that Morocco had been doing such movement is really uplifting. Thank you for letting us know.
