Ivory Coast and the Paris Climate Agreement

by | 22-06-2017 21:57 recommendations 0

The world has been submitted during several decades to unsustainable development policies and strategies. Today, the world particularly the environment is undergoing the consequences of these past actions. The climate is changing drastically and this is consequently affecting the weather, the earth and all its components. Facing this situation which is threatening the survival of the earth which is our only living place world leaders, corporate and civil society came together to find sustainable solutions to this climate issue affecting our earth. They met in Paris in 2015 and sign an important document called the Paris Climate Agreement. Ivory Coast, a West African country took part to this meeting and outlined its commitment to apply this agreement. What is the engagement took by Ivory Coast?

The first engagement took by Ivory Coast is to reduce its pollution of 22 per cent. In fact, the country is today one of the most prioritized country for investors. Corporate are becoming numerous. Thus this huge investment is also the source of pollution of the air as many of the companies produce carbon gas. So the civil society, the government and the private sector of the country have agreed to reduce their carbon produce of 22 per cent. This great step of a developing country like Ivory Coast shows the importance of the Paris Climate Agreement.

The second engagement is the commitment the country stakeholders to practice green agriculture. As a matter of fact, Ivory Coast is country whose economy is based at 60 per cent on agriculture. This shows how much the forest and the land are suffering. Due to extensive agriculture, the forests are disappearing and this is impacting negatively the climate also due to the abusive of land with chemical products, the lands are becoming poor and non-productive. So the green agriculture consists in making farm without cutting down trees and other important grasses. This plan has started with cocoa which is the most practiced agriculture. Now what wrong if some industrialized countries refuse to do the efforts which poor countries like Ivory Coast is doing.

The most universal problem among all the challenges the world is facing is the climate change issue. In fact, one country can be affected by the actions of others. So it becomes urgent to put hands together by considering the world as a big village where problems are shared. It is clear that the great producers are the great polluters, we don?t produce without polluting so it each country should take its responsibilities by getting involved according to its level of damages it causes on the health of the earth. The Paris Climate Agreement should be taken seriously by all countries in this world as each country is aspiring to development while there is no development without pollution and there is no sustainable development with Climate Change Effects. We should retain that without finding solutions to our pollutions and other development efforts there will not be a real development for the humanity.

Frederic, thank you for your report. It was interesting to read what Ivory Coast has been doing after Paris Agreement. Every time I get to know what nations all around the world are up on for Paris Agreement, I feel some hope, that things will get better. I am sure Ivory Coast is contributing some part there.

Hi Frederic, thanks for sharing your report on paris agreements and Ivory Coast:)
The two initiatives you mentioned, NDC of 22 percent and green agriculture, were really impresive, and I admire all the efforts taken by Ivory Coast. Looking forward to more news!
