Open Defecation In Tamale Open defecation persists in Ghana despite continuous education about its effect in society because mny Ghanaians consider the practice as a ?normal? way of life. For many people in Ghana, this is just normal, particularly in the north of the country, where about seven out of every ten households actually have to go into the brush for toilet. For them, its normal, its been the y of life for generations. Tamale Metropolis in the Northern Region is the second percentage of people who defecate n the open in the country. The Chief Director of the Northern Region Coordinating Council, Mr. Issahaku Alhassan in conjunction with the Environmental Health Sanitation Unit of the region and other sakeholders in Tamale at the unveikng ceremony to aunch the Open Defecation League Table. He said this act caused the country to lost $79 million last year and poses creates danger to human heath which has harmful effects for most vulnerable children. Addressing the above problems should not be a difficult task. The government, Chiefs, Assemblymen and women, District Chief Executives and rich people in the community should put up resources like money, building materials and others so that we can use it to build these facilities at market places, schools and other public places. Again policy makers and NGOs can take counseling as a tool in addressing this issue. They should make it a trouble to visit the seashores and homes and convince andlords at the disadvantages of open defecation. They can encourage them to buid toiet facilities in their homes. I believed that, the above suggestions when given serious thoughts, the high turn over of open defecation wil cease in no time . |

Hi, Abass! After reading your report, I understand why it's so hard to limit open defecation. First of all, as you mentioned, since it has been a natural way of life for so long, it's hard to change people's perception on the act. Secondly, there is a physical lack of sanitary toilet systems. The more urgent problem will be to provide sufficient toilets for normal households, because there is no choice but to go outside if there are no toilets in the first place. I hope that the government can do a part in making toilets more available to everyone, in order to solve this problem. Thank you for your report!

Hi, Abass! Thanks for your report! Building stable infrastructures is important to retain society to be safe. There are plenty of volunteering groups working for countries which lack schools or other needed facilities so to give them their own stable infrastructure which satisfies fundamental required conditions. It's essential to build proper facilities to handle defecation eco-friendly and hygienically and really I hope their governments to concentrate enough effort in solving out this problem.

Hi! I have never head about the Open Defecation League Table. In Taiwan and Russia, these problems seem unreal.

Great report Abass. This is an age old problem being brought back to the light now. Even my my country India, this was a great cause of concern. But now through government efforts and education the problem is slowly being solved.
