My JEA 2018 Experience

by Fatima alhosani | 22-09-2018 18:05 recommendations 2

First of all, I would like to show my gratitude to Ms. Erika, for hosting the JEA and for giving me the opportunity to attend this camp. Mr. Wonhee and Ms. Sunny for letting us experience the beauty of Seoul. My teammates, Jiyuu, Natasha, Stas, Gabin, Dream, Joy (Seyun) and our group's facilitator, Lina (Yunseo) for making this experience memorable for me. I will always reminisce about it.

I experienced many new things, and most importantly I benefited a lot, my interest in environmental issues and sustainable development has increased a lot. It was amusing to closely work with people of different nationalities; from exchanging souvenirs with them, learning about them, having meals with them, learning together with them, touring with them, working on the same goal with them and generally, making memories with them. My days there are engraved in my memory.

Before our trip, we had to fill in a background survey sheet which consisted of both individual and group tasks about the eco-city project. The timing of it was wrong in my case because the email of the group lists was sent only 2 days before I travel to Prague (rest in pepperoni) and the deadline was on the day of my return, but I managed to finish my tasks, my group made a group chat on kakao to do it together. The only issue we had was timezones.

Upon arriving to the airport, we went to the meeting point and Ms. Sunny (tour guide), took us to the hotel, which was one hour away from the airport. When we arrived to the hotel, the other global participants were awaiting our arrival in the lobby to head out and tour Seoul with our other tour guide, Mr. Choi Wonhee.

The weather was very humid and the streets were empty compared to when I visited it on April. However, the tour guide was kind enough to permit us to stop by a grocery store to buy refreshments on our first tour with him. We visited the beautiful Bukchon Hanok Village.

Afterward, we boarded the metro to cool down and to our next location which was cheongyecheon stream, we sat beside the stream and enjoyed the views.

The second day was the day we get to work! After eating breakfast, we headed to Samsung engineering HQ. There, we finally met the Korean participants and the facilitator.

The schedule of the program was very amusing, it consisted of beneficial lectures and fun activities.

After Ms. Erika gave the opening, a facilitator gave a speech and gave us an activity to do, we had to do the marshmallow challenge, we had to build a tall strong tower made of only marshmallow and spaghetti sticks + with the condition of having a marshmallow on top. My group, group E, managed to build one with a strong base but the marshmallow on top was the most troublesome thing. Although our tower didn't win, it was fun to bond with my groupmates.

Afterward we had a lecture about sustainable development and the UN ESCAP with Mr. Sungmin Kim. Then
was a lunch break and then we had another beneficial lecture which was understanding engineering with Mr. Hanyong Lee, he spoke about different types of engineering after the lecture was a short break. Then, we had a hands-on activity with a membrane filter (wellspring) we were asked to clean dirty water with certain equipment and we were also given a tumbler that purifies dirty water and makes it drinkable. The fact that the water within the tumbler wasn't clean made it seem scary but the water was actually clean when you drink it but its taste was strange?
After this activity, we wrapped up and the first person to try drinking the water using the tumbler gets the whole membrane filter kit.
We had dinner afterward in myeongdong and did some shopping there.

On the 9th of August, we had a tour in the Samsung engine after registering. Afterward we had two lectures about the energy of the future and energy of present with a break in between.

After the lunch break was the eco-city project, which we had to work on a bit before going. Mr Abhay Joshi, a facilitator from India and Mr Yoo Joonho, a South Korean stuff were in charge of it. We were given a map and we had to turn that area into a sustainable city with a certain budget. My group was given the hardest map and we struggled mostly with how much power plants can we put with the given budget. Two of my teammates, Stas and Jiyuu suggested selling an island in the map to a rich guy to increase the budget. With the case of trash, someone jokingly suggested we illegally dump our trash to Sweden (who use trash as an energy source) to fit the budget.

Although our city didn't win, it was a very nice experience. I got much closer to my groupmates. After the group presentation and the awarding cermony, we wrapped up and bid farewell to a few Korean participants who were unable to join the excursion on the next. For our evening tour, we visited deoksugung palace.

The next day was the excursion, we were divided into two groups, we visited Namsangol Hanok Village and N Seoul Tower in the morning. Afterward, we had a Korean lunch in insadong.
After the lunch, it rained a little and the tour guide went to buy umbrellas but he came back after the rain stopped saying "the umbrellas were too expensive". We had a lesson on how to make rice cakes in insadong. After the lesson we went to the Running Man Thematic Experience Center, I had so much fun there playing with my friend and looking for the treasures and getting points. After that, we visited the KTO Tourist Information Center (TIC) Seoul Office. We bid farewell to most of the participants, the Koreans, and the other international participants who had a flight back home. In spite of the little time I spent with them, I can never forget them.

On the 10th of August, we were supposed to visit Gyeongbokgong Palace but due to being short on time, we couldn't so we did last minutes shopping in lotte mart. We had to bid farewell to a few participants as their flight time was approaching. Later, we went to the blue house area and tongin traditional market, the tteokbokki I tried there was one thing I kept on craving when I returned. It was spicy but delicious. We went to the airport afterwards.

Although the academy was merely just a few days, not even a week. (I wish it was a little longer) The time I spent will forever be engraved in my memory as well as the people I met. Bidding farewell was very painful to me, I just wanted to stay in Korea and not go back home. Nonetheless, I hope I can meet the people I met in the academy again someday, although the chances are little and I hope they're all doing well in their lives.

Once again I'm very thankful to Ms. Erika for choosing me to attend the academy and I would like to mention fellow ambassador, Amelia, for inspiring me to post my story here too.
