Climate Change In Sierra Leone

by Joseph Garrick | 20-03-2019 17:32 recommendations 0

Climate change in Sierra Leone is an emergency as the country has been ranked the third most vulnerable nation after Bangladesh and Guinea Bissau to adverse effects of climate change. The country is least responsible for the problem since her contribution to global warming is negligible. The vulnerable population has low capability to adapt to temperature change and also the rural populations are going to be the foremost affected due to their high dependence rain fed agricultureand natural resource for livelihood.
On fourteen August 2017, a landslide killed over one thousand individuals within the mountain city of Regent on the outskirts of Sierra Leone's capital Freetown, sweeping away hundreds of residential houses. The landslide occurred when 3 days of torrential rain fell within the capital, Freetown.
The vulnerability of the country makes any relation to natural disasters at the best ironic, and at the worst insulting. The intense climate and environmental conditions that precipitated the recent devastating landslide on the outskirts of the capital, Freetown, are an operate of man¡¯s unnatural relationship with nature." Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, was buried underneath a landslide and serious flooding. The catastrophe followed hours of serious rain. The deadly landslide in Freetown, Sierra Leone with no iota of doubts was as a result of deforestation.
Throughout the season, Sierra Leone is amongst the wettest places on earth. Sierra Leone has developed several adaptation to deal with adverse effects of global climate change based on existing cope mechanisms and practices like, develop and enact applicable policies and laws relevant to the event of coastal communities, urban growth designing, and important coastal ecosystems preservation and also the institution of a National Sea-Level observant System for the nation. Climate Change is understood to adversely affect the setting, Agriculture, Food Security, and even the lives and resource of enormous communities. Fishermen are known to lost their lives in storms and traveler boats have encountered weather-related accidents–while some go unreported.
Flooding is thought to have affected agriculture and habitats of individuals in the country and their suffering aggravated by the attending health issues of water-borne diseases (typhoid infectious disease epidemic cholera and diarrhea) due to lack of safe drinking water.
Sierra Leone is especially susceptible to the increasing frequency and severity of droughts, floods and severe storms (thunder, lightning and violent winds), and their impacts on sectors like agriculture, fisheries, water resources, likewise as infrastructure and hydro-electric power production is devastating. Such climate-related hazards are having more and more adverse effects on the country and future temperature change is probably going to to exacerbate the case.
Sierra Leone is especially exposed to the impact of rain variability off and also the frequency and intensity of utmost weather events as well as heat waves and serious precipitation events. serious rain following dry spells typically ends up in intensive flooding throughout the country. The consequences of those uncommon temperature and rain patterns on agriculture, water and sanitation are evident in numerous components of the nation. The risks on food security of strictly rain-fed rice cultivation can not be unnoted.

    Hello Joseph!

Thank you for sharing the situation in Sierra Leone. Though effects of climate changes and environment contaminations are known to be global, these days I have a strong feeling that some countries are clearly more vulnerable to climate changes. It is usually because they are based on agriculture in which people must rely on the weather. It was very heart-breaking news that people living in Sierra Leone are suffering from long droughts, floods and subsequent effects of those two. (Water borne diseases, economic losses and etc.) Thank you for sharing this important issue with fellow ambassadors and your report will definitely warn people of the climate change issues.
