Thematic Report: ESCAP, Always a Very Impressive Book on Environmental Issues

by Israel Adeoye | 08-06-2019 19:53 recommendations 1

It was in a youth programme in August 2018 that I was assigned to address the youths and give a presentation on waste disposal and waste management. In my quest to develop an enriching presentation, I began to surf the internet for books that could be of assistance.

Eventually, I downloaded a PDF file from one of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) publications on ¡°INTEGRATED SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT¡±. So far that year, the book has been the most impressive book related to environmental issues to me on waste management.

In the chapter 8 of this book which focuses on waste, the book expressly stressed the various aspects of waste and gave a brilliant data analysis and history which made me want to know more on global issues on waste.

In this book, I was exposed to the various types of waste, sources of waste, waste processing and control practices, critical problems and shortcomings on waste management and waste management policies and strategies.

Base on the data analysis in this book, it was observed that Thailand has the highest number of severe cases of pollution on water, soil and air by various categories of waste, while Singapore, in all the various categories of waste on water, land and air, has the highest number of ¡°moderate to negligible¡± cases.

Also, I learnt from this book that the major challenges facing countries in the Asian and Pacific Region with regard to waste management are insufficient government priority and political support for action, lack of finance and ineffective legislation and institutions which I believe it also applies to African countries. This book also gave brilliant waste management policies and strategies that if well adopted, we all have streets in countries not only in the Asian and Pacific region but globally.

Through this exposure, I gained more knowledge and I was able to give a brilliant presentation to the youths.

This book has made understand that many scholars and institutions have really carried out researches and analysis on environmental issues and how to improve environmental situations which we can only get to know them through reading.

We are all enjoined to develop and improve our reading habit to be able to explore these findings.

    Hi Israel,

Thank you for sharing your book to other ambassadors in this community and I am impressed with your book. These days, waste management is really big deal and I am happy that you've actually touched on this point. It was interesting to see how this book dealt with the waste processes in each country. I would love to read this book later. Great report!

    Hello Israel

Thank you for sharing the most impressive book you read on environmental issues. As the waste management has become one of the most serious issues in most countries, the book you chose would have been very useful in understanding the waste disposal processes in each country. Also, it seems that you have learnt a lot from this book about types of wastes with historical data. Thank you for your wonderful report and I will try to read this book later! : )

    Hey there Israel!

How are you? I hope you are well! I too have read a few reports released by the UN... My interests were on climate change and its effects to water so seeing that you used the UN's ESCAP report made me further understand the role that the UN has in collecting, analysing and furnishing this information to anyone who needs it. I do believe that the presentation you gave was exceptional and that the youth who attended learned a great deal from your presentation.

I agree with you that non-compliance with regards to actually applying the legislations is the main issue of poor waste management and with this report, if applied, may bring change to an otherwise deteriorating planet.

Thank you so much for report Israel! I enjoyed reading your report and you made me learn quite alot. Take care and...

    Warm regards,
    Rosa
